Seven Furlongs on the Dirt

A field of seven has come together for the 9th running of the Jammed Lovely Stakes, which is an ungraded event for Ontario-bred three year old fillies. It returned to the calendar last year after a three year hiatus, but was held regularly between 2007 and 2013. In last year’s event, Aer Stables enjoyed victory with his filly Commanding Phooey. Only one filly in last year’s race is still active. Only two raced into 2017. So, with this preview, let’s call this race what it was last year, and talk about the field’s broodmare prospects, as it may just be a race to the shed. We’ll sprinkle in some race chances, though, too.

#1- Baby Goes To Rio (Aml Racing, ridden by Alan Garcia)- Has run against the best this year, so her two wins in seven starts may not fairly show how good she really is. Ran sixth in both the Grade 1 Cotillion and the Grade 1 Alabama in her last two starts. She was a large purchase via private sales from Australia Wide, for $225.000, but has only one allowance win for Aml. By Sneaky Little Pirate, she has an ideal lumbo with excellent legs and overall conformation, so she seems like a top breeding prospect. The biggest question mark will be whether or not this is her best distance in comparison to the others.

#2- Unnatural (Hambletonian Stable, ridden by P Husbands)- Has only race with the statebred tag on her after she was acquired from Night Mare Racing in the June auction for just $15.000. With two wins in nine starts, this is her stake debut. Looking at her bloodlines, Terra Rising immediately grabs my attention, as she is the dam of both Buffalo Rising, and last year’s DED Jackpot winner, Night Terra. That connection will attract a lot of interest once she is retired. Her Sire, Natural Drummer, has produced three winners of $1,000.000 or more in their career, including Tundra Kenny and Sinissippi Delite. Also has an ideal lumbo, and good overall conformation.

#3- Cyclonic (Drabfantasy, ridden by G Boulanger)- This filly is probably one of those who will not be quickly heading to the shed within months after the race, as she may just be hitting her peak. Took a while to break her maiden, but once she did, the trainer put her in the $100.000 Dogwood at CD and she ran a good second in that race. She should be one of the contenders. Now, when the time does come for her to become a broodmare, she is a triple ideal with Charley Farley on both sides.

#4- Fromage Blanc (John Henry, ridden by E R Da Silva)- Purchased in private sales form Australia Wide for $40.000, Fromage Blanc has had a successful 2017 that has seen two victories in eight starts over the year. That has mainly been participating in mid-level allowances and optional claimers, though during the spring did run in a couple stakes with similar conditions. They were not her best starts, and she is hoping to rebound here. I’m a little disappointed by her last effort, so hopefully there is good reason for that. Pedigree is strong, as she is by Mordred, and out of a second generation Chai Latte mare, but won’t win a beauty contest.

#5- Hollywood Danzer (Mb Stables, ridden by J M Campbell)- Two races ago, Hollywood Danzer was very impressive right here at WO at seven furlongs, earning a 100 SRF in her second place effort at the Grade 3 Seaway. However, something must have went wrong in her last start, which was a dud. She’s inconsistent, so we’ll see which side of her shows up here. Pedigree is highlighted by Hollywood Moon on the sire side, with interesting autogen lines on the dam side. Boasts a triple ideal conformation.

#6- Buck Warrior (Canadian Racing, ridden by E J Wilson)- As a two year old, she was a common sight here at WO running in ON-bred stakes, and she performed well, including a win in the Nandi Stakes. This year, she has not been raced all that often, appearing in just four races, and all of which were allowances. Buck Warrior comes into this race on a layoff over four months, but if nothing else, it’s good to see her back here in a statebred stake. The Nile Warrior filly also has Flying Haggis on the dam side. That’s the dam of Zyzoxolus, the sire of Ginger Haggis. Conformation is fine, though not a jaw-dropper.

#7- Family Without Rule (Angelos Stable, ridden by R M Hernandez)- Claimed from Smokey Stover for $25.000 in her last race, the new trainer has high hopes. Family Without Rule has been able to win often in her career, taking six of 10, but it has not always been against the best. There are a pair of $25.000 ungraded stake wins, though. The only time she took on a field of this caliber was the $125.000 Ballade Stakes right here at WO for ON-breds, and was a distant third. Good pedigree, with Charley Farley on the sire side and Northern Ruler/Risen Ruler on the dam side. Good sprinter conformation.
