Has been running like he needs about five miles to run his best but finally broke through after some good efforts to win a mile maiden at CD last time with an impressive finish. There is no doubt this one has ability but with a running style that seems unsuited to the new race engine he will need plenty of luck to achieve his potential. The danger as always from gate one is falling back and getting buried and that certainly looks a probability for him but different gates can produce different starts and just maybe this ace draw will help him stay closer early on. I have always cheered for the underdog and these days any closer is an underdog so i will be cheering on Sugar And Spice !
2 The Mechanic Crocker Ggs Garcia Mar
Stepped up to the mile last time and showed the improvement i like to see with an impressive one length win. He gets the perfect draw today and is working very well so whilst he still has some work to do on paper to get to this level he has every chance to run a big race today.
3 Commander Chai Serenity Stables Talamo J
Won his debut on wet ground and has been OK in his next two without fulfilling that promise. Wet track form can be a bit false so the jury is still out as to how good he is but his efforts in good company weren’t bad and this step up in trip may help. His works are strong and he is drawn well so the chance is there should he take to the trip or the rains come.
4 War Code Jive Inc. Geroux F
This stable is never shy about spending money but this may have been a purchase that they may regret a little. A good maiden winner which brought about the purchase he has been disappointing in his last two. My fingers are tightly crossed for the owner that this trip brings out the talent that he obviously has and a 1.37 fat mile work suggests it will.
5 Spiced Smokey Stover Gaffalione T
All roads tend to lead to Smokey Stover or Mb Stables when it comes to two year old stakes racing and this one has already done enough to be a success story. He won on debut but was then pretty poor in the Best Pal however the wide gate could be used as an excuse and he has done well enough since for that to be plausible. A strong win over this trip in a state bred stakes last time.
6 Deserve Mb Stables Saez G
As is usual with form at HRP this horse has both beaten and been beaten by Spiced so it is impossible to know what will happen today other than Deserve is drawn a little better today so may get revenge. He broke 1.37 in a mile work so is clearly in the top juvenile bracket and being from this stable must be given a great chance.
7 Foreign Relation Nakamura Stables Court J K
Built to a good maiden win but was then pretty poor in the Iroqouis. He is drawn out again today so gets no help there but this trip looks like it will suit and if there is a strong early pace he may find a wide path and get into it late.
8 Madagascar Waldo Landeros C
Took his time to get the maiden win but when it came it was in a competitive race and it was his first time passed 6 furlongs. He has worked very nicely since and i feel he may end up being a dark horse here sitting out in the car park. If he can get out of the gate and cross early in the lead i feel he may be the one to beat but there are a lot of if’s on that score.
SUMMARY
There are horses i like in this one, Madagascar, Sugar and Spice and War Code but then there is also an air of inevitability in these types of races so you have to favor Spiced and Deserve. Maybe not one to have a big bet on but i would be tempted to go with odds and keep you fingers crossed.
