Water Mummy Forces Pace, Kicks Clear in DMR Futurity

RACE 7 DMR 9/7/2015  Post Time 5:00PM
    DMR Futurity (GI)
$300.000   2yo     7f    Dirt
The DMR Futurity (GI) is always a huge stepping stone to a substantial career… so Downwind Stables has to be a happy camper right about now. Water Mummy forced the pace and went right on by when asked, winning by three quarters of a length in 1:21.71 for the seven panels, the second fastest time in the history of this race.  Post time favorite Double Jolly King was second and Engine Failure completed the $322.80 trifecta.

The seven babies were away in good order with Pentagon and Engine Failure next to each other and out of the gate in a hurry, Water Mummy from the far outside, Fly Millennium back towards the rail.  Plucky Springer was next, Double Jolly King from the rail and Hunters Dawn was the early trailer.

Out of the chute and now making their way down the backside, five furlongs to run, and Engine Failure between horses to stick a head in front.  Pentagon from the rail, Water Mummy three wide, then a gap of three back to Fly Millennium, Double Jolly King from the rail and Plucky Springer on the outside of that duo.  Two more lengths back to Hunters Dawn, the trailer.

The field made their way into the far turn and past the 3f pole, Pentagon on the rail now with a head in front.  Engine Failure from between horses, Water Mummy from the outside making it three across the track.  A gap of three and a half lengths, Double Jolly King on the rail, Fly Millennium between horses and Plucky Springer three wide, then two more back to Hunters Dawn, still at the rear.

At the top of the stretch and just three-sixteenth’s of a mile to run, Engine Failure now in front by a neck, Water Mummy giving chase as Pentagon began to back out of it.  Double Jolly King off of the rail and now making a run at them, Plucky Springer widest of all, Fly Millennium and Hunters Dawn still trailed, seven lengths from the front end.

Now inside the furlong marker and to the finish, Water Mummy up to stick a head in front, Engine Failure trying to dig in, Engine Failure now full of run and coming at the top pair… but as they made the push to the wire, this was Water Mummy’s afternoon and he went on to win by three-quarters of a length.  Double Jolly King closed well late to get the second spot, a quarter length in front of Engine Failure.  Plucky Springer made a late bid for the minor money, a tiring Pentagon in fifth, Fly Millennium in sixth and Hunters Dawn was never a factor and last throughout.

Water Mummy is a 2yo grey gelding by Mummy – Delaware River, by General Assembly, and he was bred in NY by La Canada Racehorses.  Purchase by current owner Downwind Stables for $60.010 from the March 2015 Auction, this was his third win from five starts and his first graded stakes win.  he now shows earnings of $248.600.  Congratulations to Downwind Stables and Water Mummy!

NOTE – Please accept my apologies for now having the preview of this race on SRF.  My weekly schedule went to my spam folder and I did not realize the schedule was out until after the races were run.  I take a lot of pride in getting my articles out in a timely fashion and again apologize for the delay/omission of the coverage.  Not having a GI race preview ‘up’ can not be tolerated.
