Some very impressive juvenile runners took to the KEE turf for a chance at a berth in the BC Juvenile Turf later this month and when the Grade III Bourbon was all said and done, the likely favourite had emerged in Fear The Feathers, who will be one to reckon with after sprinting away from top rivals by a widening length. Claimed for $45.000 off a mammoth win at DMR, he comes from an incredible family including Billy Nomates, Charley Farley, Solioquy and Meals On Wheels, and now has three wins from five career starts and a solid pair of 90+ speed ratings to build on heading into the biggest race of his budding career.
Asklepius (*2.55) and Prime Time Opus (5.10) exuded confidence from the start and took the early initiative with Still In Check (3.10) sharp from midpack and Platoon (50.90) held well against the fence. The favourite was able to quickly get down to the rail before the first turn and so was Prime Time Opus but Bluezuntwoz (13.55) was caught very wide from the outside and tracked Know How Skeleton (27.95) and Fear The Feathers (12.25) in a stream of juveniles in midpack. The first split in 23.40 was solid as Asklepius was confronted by Bluezuntwoz and down the backstretch, those two looked sharp with many of the field near the back of the pack and looking for a pace to charge into, which they got with a 46.73 half-mile. As quickly as he engaged, Bluezuntwoz backed away and left the leader all alone and as Prime Time Opus made a minor run, the real threat looked to be from Fear The Feathers, with a lack of racing room being his big obstacle. A rapid six-furlongs in 1:09.95 saw Asklepius moved into a two-wide path and that opened up the rail for Fear The Feathers, who burst through to engage for the lead, and at the top of the stretch, it came down to these two with Still In Check charging in third. A furlong from the wire, Fear The Feathers took the lead and started to pull away from Asklepius and while Still In Check charged hard, he was second-best by a length but nearly a length in front of the favourite, who tired only late when pressured. Laffin Sippin (20.10) closed well for the final cheque over Crushdelphia (5.45), who raced up into fifth from the widest post alongside a lackluster Platoon. Know How Skeleton and Pump Action Shotgun outfinished Prime Time Opus, Spanish Country (187.30) and No Tears For A Clown (111.95) showed nothing and Bluezuntwoz backed up very badly to finish last in a tough effort after showing such promise on the lawn.
Fear The Feathers ran the fastest time ever in the Grade II Bourbon, and the fastest 1 1/16 miles on turf for a two-year-old this year, and ran himself right into the role of favourite for the BC Juvenile Turf with an authoritative victory over the same track he will face on Halloween. His pedigree suggests turf all day, his form both before and after the claim suggest big things and all in all, he looks like the type who could excel over this trip and looks big for the BC, regardless of his draw.
Congratulations goes out to owner Our Athletes and their two-year-old gray colt Fear The Feathers, a supreme winner of the Grade III Bourbon at KEE!
