The Shoemaker Mile (Grade 1)- $500.000 Purse
SA- For Three Year Olds and Upward
One Mile on the Turf
May 25, 2020
Nine months ago, Nolespan Racing claimed B N Broadway, a horse that had made his living in claimers, for $14.000. He would win a two-way shake that day. The trainer had big plans, entering him in a Grade 3 right away, but the gelding was not quite ready. He continued to run well when not entered into graded stakes, and the Shoemaker Mile represented his next chance to step up at this level. With not much to look at in the way of public works, it was hard for outsiders to see if he had been progressing enough to be able to support him, and as such, he would go off at odds of nearly 16/1. We would get our answer, as B N Broadway was ready to perform under the lights of the big stage, and earned the win for Nolespan Racing, the first for the trainer in this race. The winning rider is Mar Garcia, and it is his first win as well. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:32.95, a little slower then recent years, but all that was needed. Let’s take a look!
(1/4 Mile- :23.14)- Jakers Delight, out of Nolespan Racing prevails in an early battle to take a slight lead at this point of the race, running ahead of Threshold’s Nice Dive, who pushed forward from the outside. Running right there with them was our eventual winner, B N Broadway, part of Nolespan Racing, and he was less then a length behind his stablemate here early on. Another good starter in the field was Brief And Wonderous, from Fractious, who eventually settled into a stalking position. Within a length of him, he had two on his inside, including last year’s winner, Going Gone, from John Henry. With him was Decision In Five, out of Nakamura Stables. After another length, we had the Mb Stables-trained Bring The Pain. Next in line were Hefner (Mb Stables) and California Chrome (Nakamura Stables). Running way behind was Concerto Of Eggs (TwinTowersRacing).
(½ Mile- :45.93)- There is not much change at the front of the field as the pace picks up over the second quarter of the race. Jakers Delight and Nice Dive are still running neck and neck for the race lead, while B N Broadway keeps them in his sight, running just a length behind them. They pull away from the rest of the field a little more, as Brief And Wonderous, who had been stalking them, now drops three lengths off of the pace. He is still running with Going Gone and Decision Of Five, so neither of them were interested in running with the top three, either. Behind them, the next row of three remained Bring The Pain, Hefner, and California Chrome. Bring The Pain had a nice outer lane here to use if he wanted to advance. There was another gap of three to Concerto Of Eggs, who was running all by himself.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- At the end of the backstretch, the top three were still holding down those spots, but as soon as they entered the turn, neither Jakers Delight or Nice Dive were able to keep up with B N Broadway. This allowed B N Broadway to get away just a little bit before reaching the top of the stretch, enjoying a length and a half lead. Going Gone had done a nice job slicing his way through traffic, and was poised to take a run at him. Bring The Pain was starting to look good in the outside, but it just seemed like both of them began these runs a little too late. None of the others in the field were making a noteworthy advance as of yet.
(Finish- 1:32.95)- It was not easy for B N Broadway in the stretch, but he still had plenty left in the tank to handle the runs that were coming at him. This steady stride all the way to the wire allowed him to hang on over the second place Bring The Pain. The runner up was best in the very late moments of this race, suggesting that he needed to be closer early. Going Gone was a little underwhelming with his actual stretch performance, but it was still enough for third. Hefner did well to move to the rail and get up for the fourth place check, narrowly over California Chrome, but neither were a concern to the top two, at least. Rounding out the order, it’s Jakers Delight, Decision In Five, Brief And Wonderous, Concerto Of Eggs, and Nice Dive.
About The Winner- B N Broadway, trained by Nolespan Racing, and ridden to victory by Mar Garcia, is a five year old gelding by B N Panther, and is out of Broadway Lass. He was bred in New York by Gdp Inc as a yearling, and acquired by Nolespan Racing, via Royalty Stables, for a $14.000 claim in August 2019. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his seventh in 25 starts, and its first stake win of any sort. His career earnings are now $438.480.
