DMR Derby (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
DMR- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Eighth on the Turf
September 6, 2020
Through time, Maxmillion Farm has gained a reputation for possibly being the game’s best trainer when it comes to turf horses. This May, he spent just $50.000 to pick up Technic, still a maiden, in private sales. The gelding by Scott The Great would win his debut for the trainer, and then in his next start was close to pulling off a win in the Grade 2 Read Stakes. The win that he did not get here six weeks ago, he would get today as Technic gets the job done as the post-time favorite, as well as our pick, in the DMR Derby. It marks the first win in the race for both Maxmillion Farm and jockey Mario Gutierrez. Congratulations to them! The time of victory was 1:45.48, right in line with other recent times. Let’s take a look!
(½ Mile- :47.78)- He would not be the leader after half a mile, but the quickest horse out of the gate was actually Money Truck, from Spankys Barn. It appeared as though he would be the pacesetter, but moving into the opening turn, he would be restrained into the middle of the field. While he was going back, our eventual winner, Technic from Maxmillion Farm, made a concerted charge towards the end of the frontstretch to move up from his midpack position, and take the lead. Big Aspirations, from Fractious, had a similar start as the winner, and ran second at this point, half a length from the lead. With a more normal start, Its Personal (Mb Stables) ran third on the rail, with Raleigh In Doubt (Ekli Stable) next to him, as well as Money Truck. It was a couple lengths then to Ohtani (Sccj Stables), and a couple more to Bombay Diplomat (High Voltage).
(¾ Mile- 1:10.65)- In the backstretch, Technic remains in the lead and is able to pull ahead of Big Aspirations by about a length. Considering that these two end up being the top two finishers, this length would prove to be quite valuable in the long run. For now Big Aspirations seemed to be perfectly fine where he was and not regretting things, and was a length himself ahead of the same three wide group that had been behind him before. Ohtani began to show more interest and was looking to make a four wide move. Bombay Diplomat still had a lot of work to do.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Technic handles the turn in a graceful manner and continues to hold his length advantage over the second place Big Aspirations. That one was also running well, but now had the task of making up that ground conceded in the backstretch. Raleigh In Doubt would poke a head in front for third as neither Its Personal nor Money Truck would respond with run on exit of the turn. Bombay Diplomat was left behind.
(Finish- 1:45.48)- A strong run throughout allowed Technic to pick up the victory with a steady run in the stretch. Big Aspirations would draw closer, but Technic still seemed to be in control all the way to the wire in the victory by a neck. Raleigh In Doubt was a clear third, a length ahead of a close photo between Ohtani and Money Truck. Its Personal and Bombay Diplomat round it out.
About the Winner- Technic, trained by Maxmillion Farm and ridden to victory by Mario Gutierrez, is a three year old gelding by Scott The Great, and is out of Unsecured. He was bred in Ontario by Team 7 Illusions as a first quarter two year old and acquired by Maxmillion in private sales for $50.000 in May 2020. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his second in six starts, and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $222.400.
