The Frizette (Grade 1) (BC) (KYO)- $325.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies Two Years Old
One Mile on the Dirt
October 10, 2020
The two year old racing at BEL has attracted a lot of interest from many different barns, and in the running of the Grade 1 Frizette we will get a chance to see some of the best young fillies in the game. The immediate prize for these twelve is the BC Juvenile Fillies which runs next month, but the long term plan is so much more than that. Last year, the race was won by Smokey Stover’s Blonde Bomber, but her three year old season would only last two races. In the marvels of virtual breeding, she has already given birth to two foals as well! The field last year does lack many horses who went on to be three year old stars, so hopefully things will be different for this crop. 2018 winner Camp Hollywood would be a much more exciting path for these fillies to try and follow. Let’s meet the field!
#1- Class On Class (Fractious, ridden by A Beschizza)- This filly has won one of her four races and will need to improve off her last outing, where she was only eighth in the Grade 1 Spinaway at SAR. She was passed by several in the stretch in that one, and that was only seven furlongs. Several in here come out of that race, but fortunately we are still talking about young horses and improvement is very much a possibility.
#2- Foregone Conclusion (D J C Racing Stables, ridden by E Jaramillo)- Here is another horse that we saw in the Grade 1 Spinaway, but her turn at the Spa went a lot better. She ran near the front most of the way, and made up some ground late to finish third and within a length. This Que Niagra filly looks like she wants to keep increasing her distance, and if she can build on that race, she could get a major score here.
#3- Ms Joyce (RNP Stables, ridden by G Corrales)- She has proven herself this year with three wins in six starts, including wins in the $125.000 Debutante at CD, and then stepping up into the Grade 2 Adirondack at SAR and taking that as well. Off of that, she tried going long for the first time, in the Grade 2 Chandelier at SA, and that did not go well, though she made up ground late. Yes, that race was just two weeks ago, and others in here are much more rested.
#4- Secret Eyes (Gdp Inc, ridden by Ru Fuentes)- It will be a jump up in class here for this one, but she does come off a victory in her last start. That would be running against NY-breds in the $150.000 Seeking The Ante at SAR last month. She has been able to win, doing so twice in four starts, but she has not faced this level of competition before. Her start will be important, as I don’t think she wants to be near the front like she was two races ago.
#5- Ma Party (Chili King Stables, ridden by I Ortiz Jr)- Two starts ago, she ran against Secret Eyes in what was a strong N1X allowance. She would be third in the race, and unlike her rival where a similar finish led to a stake, this CA-bred went to SA last month, ran a mile, and won an optional claimer by three. That’s an exciting result to build off of, and she went wire to wire in the process.
#6- Undervalued (Mb Stables, ridden by R M Hernandez)- A winner of just one of her five starts thus far, but she has been picking up experience running at the graded level. In August, she was fifth in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes, and improved that a month later in the Grade 1 DMR Debutante. She is coming along, and I feel that she will be in the mix late, but I don’t feel confident with putting her on top.
#7- Rum Dummy (Mb Stables, ridden by T Gaffalione)- After winning on debut, Rum Dummy was entered into the Grade 3 Schuylerville at SAR and came from behind in the mud to pick up the win. From there, she was a regular in the SAR Graded circuit but would not be able to hit the board again. Doubters might be saying that she needed the mud in the Schuylerville, but Mb can certainly get her back on track.
#8- Z Plenty (LionKing Stables, ridden by J J Hernandez)- Z Plenty has been racing plenty, with six starts made so far. She has hit the board in five of them, but all of those are in overnights. This filly is one of our runners that comes out of the Grade 1 Spinaway, and in that one, she only placed fourth. All was going well, but former trainer Sir Daniel Martin opted for the cash out, and sent her to LionKing just three days ago.
#9- Golden Bay (Our Athletes, ridden by J J Castellano)- The second horse in the race that is by Bay Of Plenty (Z Plenty the other). In four starts, Golden Bay has always been a part of the exacta, with one wins and three places. After she did finally break her maiden, she was entered into the Grade 1 DMR Debutante last month, and just missed at the wire, getting another second place to show for it. Should be one of the top threats here.
#10- Ruffians Legacy (Fractious, ridden by D Davis)- She will be making a big jump in class here after breaking her maiden at SAR in August six weeks ago, her last start. I like that she has had time to rest after that, and the trainer has taken his time to get her right and ready for this race.
#11- Big Challenge (Waldo, ridden by J Alvarado)- The Calm Havoc filly has been able to get some graded experience of her own after breaking her maiden. In July, she ran in the Grade 3 Schuylerville and was within a length of the winner despite her fifth place finish. Followed that up in the DMR Debutante, and ran in third. Likes to be near the lead early, so we will see if starting on the outside affects her running style at all.
#12- Grazin At Sunrise (Smokey Stover, ridden by J J Velazquez)- Off to a good start, and if she wins it would be the second in a row for the trainer. Regardless, I am sure the trainer would be happy if she could have more of a career then Blonde Bomber would. She is off to a great start, with a win in the $150.000 Astoria, before two good races in the Graded events at SAR, placing third in the Schuylerville and fourth in the Adirondack. Working well coming into this.
