Stormy Knight Shines Bright in Cutler Bay

Stormy Knight delivered a polished winning effort in the Cutler Bay on March 28, 2026, giving Mb Stables another stakes success with R. M. Hernandez aboard. The gelding was not on the engine early, but he stayed close enough to the action, advanced at the right moment, and took control before the finish to stop the clock in 1:26.59 over the firm inner turf at Gulfstream Park. At a little over 5-1, he rewarded his backers with a performance that confirmed the promise he had shown in his prior turf allowance victories.

The $150.000 Cutler Bay, contested at 7 1/2 furlongs for three-year-olds, developed into a lively and well-run turf event with fractions of :22.3, :46.0, and 1:09.2. The race featured several runners with legitimate chances at different stages, but the decisive move came from Stormy Knight, who turned a good stalking trip into a winning one. Behind him, Renard ran a strong race for second, while Regal Classic was game in third after showing the way for much of the journey.

Race Recap

This was an efficient and convincing performance from Stormy Knight. He let the early speed develop in front of him, stayed within striking distance through the first half of the race, and then produced the winning run when it mattered. It was his second straight turf win and another sign that he is progressing nicely for Mb Stables.

Renard also ran a very strong race in defeat. He had a favorable tracking trip, stayed involved every step of the way, and kept on well enough to finish second. He did not get the best of the winner late, but this was another quality effort and continued his productive turf form. Regal Classic deserves credit as well for setting the pace and still holding third after being the one everyone had to catch.

The favorite, Flight Count, ran below what many might have expected. He had been the clear public choice and entered the race off two strong turf wins, but his patient early placement left him with too much to do in the stretch. He was not disgraced, but he did not produce the same finishing punch that had carried him in prior starts. By contrast, Pinks Promise ran much better than expected at 90-1, finishing in a dead heat for fifth and outrunning his odds with a respectable effort against stronger company than he had previously faced.

Great Scholar had some late interest but could not reach the top group and settled for a share of fifth. Boss Mb was in the race for a long way before flattening late. Lost In Translation was up close early but faded through the stretch after racing in the first flight throughout.

The winner is by Our Dark Knight out of Bora Stormwarrior, was bred by Our Athletes (NY), and is owned and trained by Mb Stables. With this stakes victory, Stormy Knight raised his lifetime earnings to $146.900. A logical next option could be another sophomore turf stake at a similar route or elongated sprint trip, depending on how ambitiously his connections want to place him after this Gulfstream success.

Individual Trip Notes

Stormy Knight sat in a stalking position, moved into second by the stretch call, and finished best to win the Cutler Bay.

Renard tracked just behind the leaders throughout, stayed within range at every stage, and ran on well for second.

Regal Classic went to the front immediately, controlled the pace through the major calls, and held third after setting the terms.

Flight Count was reserved near the back early, improved through the lane, but left himself too much to do and finished fourth.

Great Scholar raced in the second half of the field, made some progress late, and finished in a dead heat for fifth.

Pinks Promise also came from off the pace and finished in a dead heat for fifth, turning in a better race than his odds suggested.

Boss Mb traveled in a midpack stalking spot and weakened late after staying involved through the stretch call.

Lost In Translation raced prominently early and through the middle stages, then faded in the final furlong.
