Main Man Stands Tall in NM Breeders Derby

New Mexico Breeders Derby

Purse $130.000 – For Three Year Olds Foaled In NM

1 1/16 Miles – Dirt

Sunland Park – March 29, 2026

Main Man stamped his authority on the New Mexico-bred division with a commanding win in the 13th edition of the New Mexico Breeders Derby. This score marked his second consecutive stakes victory against State-Bred rivals. With the win and a résumé that includes just one off-the-board finish from nine starts, the son of Remainder’s earnings now stands at $185.110. Bears Stable gets his first New Mexico Breeders Derby, and jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr. extended his streak to three straight victories. A deserving result all around, especially as a homebred, as Main Man looks poised to make further noise as his career progresses. Congratulations!

Winner: Main Man – (Bears Stable, A J. Juarez Jr.) There wasn’t much speed from this gelding breaking from the gate, so he took back three lengths off the lead heading down the backside. Main Man found a smooth rhythm and began inching up on the leaders around the 5/16 pole. His presence was only felt in the final furlong, surging forward with big, powerful strides late. He found the wire at the last possible moment and stopped the clock for the mile in 1:42.01. Now with two stakes wins under his belt, Main Man has a plethora of opportunities for the remainder of the year. No doubt a rewarding moment for the connections.

Second Place: Hydrostatic – (Mb Stables, L. Contreras) Jockey Luis Contreras wasted no time, sending Hydrostatic straight to the lead. In a matter of strides, he opened up a length advantage and set solid fractions of 23.72, 47.63, and 1:11.73. Approaching the quarter pole, he drifted slightly off the rail as pressure began to mount from behind. He dug in gamely down the stretch, showing plenty of determination as he fought to hold his position late. It was somewhat surprising to see Hydrostatic go off as the favorite without prior stakes experience, but he proved he belonged at this level. This gelding looks likely to be a future stakes winner.

Third Place: El Jefe – (Night Rider Stables, F S. Valdez) New tactics were on display for El Jefe, as he was positioned much closer to the pace. While it was only a five-horse field, jockey Felipe Valdez placed him in an ideal spot throughout. He sat just a length off Hydrostatic down the backside. Approaching the 3/8 pole, El Jefe began to advance along the rail and ranged up to the leader in the final furlong. However, he was unable to match strides with the eventual winner closing on the outside. Still, it was an encouraging effort, and connections should be pleased as he showed a new dimension. He looks to be best suited for one-turn races in the future.

Fourth Place: Rust In Peace – (Xcel Racing, E. Medellin) After a runner-up finish in the New Mexico Breeders Derby prep, Rust In Peace didn’t get the setup he needed here. He was buried along the rail into the first turn and down the backside, sitting fourth and about four lengths off the leaders. There was little change in the running order until the quarter pole, where he found himself shuffled farther back with plenty left to do. Rust In Peace made up some ground in the stretch, but the lack of early pace made his task much more difficult. He will be more effective with a larger field and a stronger pace scenario.
