Cumberland Blue Delivers the Goods in the Wood Memorial

Cumberland Blue confirmed his rise in the three-year-old division on April 4, 2026, capturing the Grade II Wood Memorial at Aqueduct for Jerry Garcia Racing under C. H. Borel. The colt went off favored, settled well off the early tempo, advanced steadily through the second half of the race, and finished best of all to win the Kentucky Derby points race in 1:48.22 for 1 1/8 miles on a fast track. It was his second straight stakes victory after the Gotham (G3) and pushed his lifetime earnings to $696.160.

The $750.000 Wood Memorial drew a full field of sophomores and unfolded through fractions of :47.1, 1:11.2, and 1:36.0 before the field reached the wire in 1:48.1. Off To Shepton ran a strong second, Dune Road outran his odds for third, and several highly regarded contenders had their opportunities but could not finish with the same strength.

Race Recap

This was another strong performance from Cumberland Blue. After winning the Gotham (G3) in his previous start, he again showed that he could sit off the pace, advance at the right time, and finish with authority. He was not part of the early battle, which likely helped him preserve his kick, and once he got into the clear in the final stages, he proved best. For a colt with only five starts, it was a mature effort in one of the key spring preps.

Off To Shepton ran too well to overlook. He improved from a good Gotham third to an even better Wood second, making the lead at the stretch call and fighting on well when challenged. This was a forward move and one that suggested he belongs with this class. Dune Road also deserves mention for outrunning his 21-1 odds and finishing a close third after being well back early. He clearly ran much better than expected and gave a solid account of himself against stronger company.

Among the others, Wealthy B Wonka showed speed and stayed on better than some of the deeper closers, while Suspended again ran creditably without winning, finishing in the first half of the field after another patient trip. Endless Stir was lightly raced and not disgraced, but the added distance and class test proved demanding late. Mankayia and Concession Speech never found enough in the lane, and the same was true for Big Bang Orbitor and Seven Colors. Up To No Good, Terrorizer, Stray Cat, and The Babylonian all had chances to improve position but could not sustain a finishing run when the race intensified.

Cumberland Blue is by Excoriator out of Greek Princess(1), was bred by Jerry Garcia Racing (Ky), and remains under the same ownership.

Individual Trip Notes

Cumberland Blue settled well back early, advanced steadily through the second half, and finished best to win the Wood Memorial.

Off To Shepton improved throughout the race, took over at the stretch call, and fought on well to hold second.

Dune Road was unhurried early, improved strongly in the latter stages, and finished a better-than-expected third.

Wealthy B Wonka showed speed from the outset, remained involved throughout, and stayed on for fourth.

Suspended raced in midpack, kept on through the stretch, and finished fifth without seriously threatening the top four.

Endless Stir sat close to the pace, stayed involved into the stretch, and faded to sixth late.

Mankayia was never far from the main body of the field but could not produce enough in the final stages.

Concession Speech raced in the stalking group early and middle stages, then flattened out in the lane.

Big Bang Orbitor raced from the second half of the field, made some progress, but weakened late.

Seven Colors was in the middle group early and lost ground as the race tightened.

Up To No Good trailed early and never mounted the kind of rally needed to contend.

Terrorizer showed early speed, remained forward for part of the trip, and faded badly in the final stages.

Stray Cat was always near the back and never reached contention.

The Babylonian also raced in the rear and could not make up enough ground to threaten.
