Extravagant Turns the Tables in American Stakes

Extravagant delivered a polished performance in the Grade III American Stakes at Santa Anita on April 19, 2026, giving Bigchief Stables a stakes victory at one mile on firm turf. Under Fresu A, the 4-year-old son of Great State sat close from the outset, moved forward through the middle stages, took over by the third call, and then finished the job by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:32.50. It was his first win of 2026 and a sharp return to top form after facing stronger company earlier in the season.

The American Stakes carried a purse of $100.00 and produced a tightly packed finish behind the winner, with several runners still within striking range turning for home. Extravagant proved the one who finished with the clearest authority, while Clandestine Healer outran expectations to complete the exacta and Stop Hammertime stayed on well enough to secure third. The result also continued a notable run of strong recent editions of this race, which has been won in recent years by Mr Scratch, Americas Hope, Theegala, and Boo Boo.

Race Recap

The race unfolded at a measured but honest tempo, with Sacred Temple showing the way at the opening call and continuing on top at the second marker. Extravagant was placed in a tracking spot throughout that early phase, never far from the front, while Excogitator, Shake Shack, Stop Hammertime, and Travis Mathew all held positions that kept them involved. As the field moved into the far turn, Extravagant advanced with purpose, reached the lead by the third call, and established control before the stretch run was fully underway.

From there, Fresu A kept Extravagant focused and the gelding maintained his edge to the wire. Clandestine Healer closed well from farther back and reduced the margin late, while Stop Hammertime also kept on steadily to be third. Excogitator was prominent into the lane before settling for fourth and Shake Shack and Travis Mathew both had every chance to threaten before flattening out late. Frick, Savaged, and Mr Monarch were also within range at different stages, but none could deliver the same final punch as the winner.

Individual Trip Notes

Extravagant gave Bigchief Stables a well-earned graded score. He was in the right place early, moved at the right moment, and sustained his run all the way through the lane. This was a strong, efficient mile from a horse that had already shown he belonged in better turf company.

Clandestine Healer turned in a much better race than expected. He was well back in the opening stages, improved steadily, and closed strongly to take second. Off the form he brought into this race, this was a notable forward effort.

Stop Hammertime sat in midpack, stayed engaged the whole way, and kept coming late to grab third. It was a credible follow-up after his February allowance win at Turf Paradise and a better showing than his prior graded try at Gulfstream.

Excogitator was well placed throughout and loomed as a real threat when he moved into second by the third call. He could not finish quite as strongly as the top three but still ran a solid race in a new setting on turf after entering off a dirt win.

Shake Shack had a forward, involved trip and remained in contention into the lane. He lost some ground in the final stages but was not disgraced in this tougher spot.

Travis Mathew had a favorable enough position through the first three calls and was still third turning for home. He could not sustain that bid late and wound up sixth.

Frick was never too far out of it but lacked the needed acceleration in the stretch. His finish was honest without threatening the principals.

Savaged trailed the field early and was still well back turning for home. He made only limited progress and could not improve his position enough in the stretch.

Mr Monarch was another who outran his odds to some degree by staying closer to the action than expected for much of the race before finishing ninth. He was still within range late on the far turn, which made this more competitive than his price suggested.

El Gran Blue Jay was among the back group throughout and never landed a meaningful blow in the stretch. He was unable to transfer his dirt form into this graded turf test.

Sacred Temple showed the early way and controlled the pace through the first two calls, but the pressure mounted by the far turn and he gave way in the stretch. After stepping up from maiden company, this was a much tougher assignment.
