Term Limits produced the strongest finish of his career in the 2026 Texas Derby at Lone Star Park, rallying from well off the pace to defeat Ripple Effect by a half-length for TwinTowersRacing and jockey Sanchez M J. The son of Neon Wolf entered the race off several graded stakes defeats but found the perfect setup in the $300.000 event for three-year-olds, surging through the stretch to upset the heavily favored Flop. Lone Star Park hosted a deep and competitive renewal that featured several accomplished stakes colts, but the late-running winner capitalized on a contested pace and sustained his momentum all the way to the wire.
Race Recap
Flop immediately established command after the break and dictated the tempo through the opening stages, holding a narrow advantage over Guapo while Neon Lemon tracked close behind. Ripple Effect settled comfortably just behind the first flight while Term Limits was unhurried early and positioned toward the back half of the compact field.
The pace remained measured through the opening half-mile in :47 flat, with Flop still narrowly in front entering the far turn. Guapo remained under pressure just to his outside while Ripple Effect began advancing smoothly into contention. Behind them, Term Limits started to improve position approaching the final bend after trailing much of the early running.
Turning for home, Flop still held the lead after opening daylight at the third call, but Ripple Effect quickly ranged up to challenge. Term Limits continued building momentum with every stride and surged past tiring rivals through the lane. Ripple Effect briefly appeared ready to seize control inside the final furlong, but Term Limits finished best of all and edged clear late to secure the victory.
Weaponize delivered a much stronger effort than his odds suggested, closing steadily from midpack to finish third at 27.35 odds after competing in tougher graded company earlier in the season. Guapo remained involved throughout before flattening late, while El Heat stayed on evenly after a stalking trip. Indian improved mildly in the stretch but never threatened the leaders.
Neon Lemon outran massive odds and remained competitive far longer than expected after tracking the leaders early. A Great Deal loomed into contention entering the stretch before weakening during the final stages. The heavily favored Flop controlled the pace for much of the race but could not withstand the late pressure and faded to third after appearing in command turning for home.
