Grand Design Blossoms On Yielding Turf In Miss Liberty Stakes

Grand Design delivered a sharp tactical performance in the 2026 Miss Liberty Stakes at Monmouth Park, taking command during the middle stages before drawing away to a two-length victory for Bigchief Stables and jockey Bravo J. Sent off at 3-1 odds, the six-year-old mare handled the yielding turf comfortably and proved strongest late in the $100.000 stake for fillies and mares.

The Miss Liberty Stakes brought together a compact but competitive group of turf mares over 1 1/16 miles on yielding ground. Early fractions of :23.3 and :47.4 kept the field tightly grouped for much of the contest before Grand Design asserted herself approaching the far turn and carried that momentum through the lane. The final time for the race was 1:43.49.

Race Recap

Pelayo and Grand Design were the primary pace factors immediately after the break, with Chocolate Hills tracking closely nearby while Book Of Spells settled into striking range just behind them. Yesterdays Queen and Krystala were positioned farther back through the opening stages as the field remained compact entering the first turn.

By the opening half-mile, Pelayo still held a narrow advantage while Grand Design remained glued to the leader’s flank. Chocolate Hills continued to track comfortably in third, and Book Of Spells maintained a steady rhythm in fourth without losing contact with the front group. Krystala was still well back at that stage while Yesterdays Queen struggled to advance from the rear.

The complexion of the race shifted approaching the final turn when Grand Design moved past Pelayo and opened daylight on the field. Krystala began a sustained late rally from the back half of the pack and rapidly closed ground through the stretch. Pelayo continued to battle on gamely after setting the early pace, while Book Of Spells stayed on evenly in the lane. Chocolate Hills flattened during the final furlong after stalking throughout, and Yesterdays Queen never seriously threatened.

Grand Design maintained her advantage through the final stages to secure the victory for Bigchief Stables, with Krystala finishing strongly for second after outperforming her odds. Pelayo held third after doing significant early work against the pace.

How The Field Ran

Grand Design

Grand Design ran one of the best races of her career on yielding turf. After pressing Pelayo through the opening stages, she seized control by the third call and widened her advantage late under Bravo J. The mare now owns six turf victories and showed she can transfer her form successfully from allowance company into stakes competition.

Krystala

Krystala produced a much stronger effort than many expected. She trailed the field through the early calls before unleashing a determined late run to finish second. The Alydar Stables’s filly had been lightly raced entering the event, and this performance suggested significant improvement at longer distances.

Pelayo

Pelayo was involved from the opening strides and carried the pace through demanding fractions on yielding turf. She briefly held the lead before Grand Design moved past entering the stretch. Despite the pressure, she remained competitive throughout and stayed on for third.

Book Of Spells

Book Of Spells secured a steady stalking trip and remained within range of the leaders at every call. She lacked the acceleration of the top pair late but still delivered another consistent turf effort for Simmer Down Stable.

Chocolate Hills

Chocolate Hills tracked close to the pace while traveling comfortably through the opening half of the race. She remained in contention turning for home but lost momentum late and faded to fifth after appearing well placed throughout.

Yesterdays Queen

Yesterdays Queen never found the same finishing kick she had shown in prior stakes appearances. She raced near the back early and remained there throughout the final stages while unable to make a significant impact on the outcome.

About The Winner

Grand Design is a daughter of Inconceivable out of Broomstick Mixed, bred by Bigchief Stables and campaigned by the same connections. With this victory, the gray mare improved her lifetime earnings to $127.240 while securing the sixth victory of her career.
