The Jones Stakes will be run on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Ellis Park as Race #5, bringing older horses together over one mile on dirt for a purse of $200.000. The race has grown steadily in value since High Crimes won the $60.000 edition in 2022, followed by Tango Mango in 2023, Pennine Way in 2024 and Without Me in 2025. None of those winners returns, but two winning Jones Stakes jockeys are represented: Corrales G, who won aboard Pennine Way in 2024, rides Pure Winner, while Bejarano R, aboard 2025 winner Without Me, gets Patrol. The field is unusually balanced, with several entrants bringing strong one-mile form but arriving from very different class levels.
1. Pure Winner — Serenity Stables / Corrales G — Odds: 5/1
Pure Winner has been consistently competitive at a much stronger level than many of these. He won a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer at Santa Anita in May and was second in a $100.000-level optional claimer at Churchill before taking on the Grade II Suburban, where he finished sixth after racing fourth through the first three calls. His 2026 record of two wins, two seconds and a third from six starts reflects reliable form, and he has already won eight times overall. The drop from Grade II company into this $200.000 stake makes him a serious contender, particularly with a sharp :57 4/5 five-furlong work at Monmouth leading into the race.
2. Ilium — D J C Racing Stables / Centeno D E — Odds: 7/2
Ilium enters in excellent form and may be sitting on his strongest race yet. He won a one-mile allowance at Lone Star on July 12 after settling fourth, advancing to third and taking command late. That followed a narrow runner-up finish in the Grade III Triple Bend at seven furlongs, giving him credible graded-stakes evidence as well as a recent victory at today’s exact distance. His five 2026 starts have produced two wins, two seconds and a third, and his tactical versatility gives Centeno D E several options. He is one of the most obvious win candidates in the field.
3. Bahamut — Serenity Stables / Espinoza V — Odds: 6/1
Bahamut has quietly assembled a strong 2026 campaign with three wins from five starts. His most recent effort produced a muddy-track victory at Albuquerque at one mile, where he controlled the race throughout. Earlier he won a one-mile optional claimer at Gulfstream by two lengths and another one-mile allowance at Belterra. His current form therefore matches today’s distance exceptionally well. The question is class: much of his success has come below the level faced by Pure Winner and Ilium, but his repeated victories make him more than capable of taking advantage if the leading contenders fail to fire.
4. Magnum Opus — Mojica Racing / Cabrera D — Odds: 12/1
Magnum Opus is an intriguing class riser after winning a 5 1/2-furlong Lone Star allowance on July 12. He came from fifth, moved to second and prevailed narrowly, showing he does not require the lead to win. Earlier this season he dominated a one-mile claiming race by five lengths and finished second going 1700 meters, so the return to a route is not an issue. The larger concern is the sharp jump from claiming and allowance company into a $200.000 stake. His current form is strong, but this is unquestionably his toughest assignment of the season.
5. Finding Nemo — Night Rider Stables / Hernandez B J Jr — Odds: 8/1
Finding Nemo brings considerable experience with 41 lifetime starts, including 10 victories and earnings of $318.250. His latest start was a sixth-place finish in the Grade III Dominion Day at 1 1/8 miles, but immediately before that he was beaten only a neck in a $100.000 stake at Fonner Park and won a Fair Grounds allowance at 1 1/16 miles. His ability at route distances is well established, and shortening from nine furlongs to a mile should place him closer to his preferred range. He is a credible contender whose recent Grade III experience adds value.
6. Inoue — Royalty Stables / Machado L — Odds: 5/2
Inoue earns top billing after winning over this exact Ellis Park mile on July 2. He tracked the leader throughout, moved into contention and prevailed in a close finish in a strong optional claiming race. More importantly, his broader form shows he belongs with stakes horses: he competed in the Grade II Belmont Gold Cup, Grade II Turf Sprint and Grade III Hooper earlier this year after finishing fourth in the Grade II Clark last November. The return to dirt and one mile produced an immediate victory, and his subsequent Ellis Park works have been exceptionally sharp, including a 1:02 2/5 six-furlong drill and a :57 3/5 five-furlong move. He appears exceptionally well prepared for this assignment.
7. Patrol — Avenue Z / Bejarano R — Odds: 9/2
Patrol exits the same July 2 Ellis Park mile won by Inoue and finished third after racing near the rear before making up significant ground. He had previously won consecutive route races at Turf Paradise, including victories at one mile and 1 1/16 miles. That makes him a proven one-turn/route performer who already has direct evidence against today’s projected favorite. His recent one-mile workout at Del Mar in 1:36 1/5 was the fastest of four at the distance, and the presence of Bejarano R — winner of this race last year — adds another positive. He is a legitimate threat if the early pace gives him a target.
Pace Structure & Race Outlook
The pace does not appear overloaded with horses who absolutely require the lead. Inoue has demonstrated the ability to sit immediately behind the pace, while Bahamut has shown considerably more willingness to take control early, including leading throughout his latest one-mile victory. Magnum Opus has previously raced near the front over a mile, but his latest sprint victory showed he can also settle farther back.
Pure Winner normally operates from a stalking position, while Ilium has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to advance from the middle of the field. Finding Nemo and especially Patrol are more likely to do their best work after the early stages.
That structure could give Bahamut an opportunity to establish the tempo, but Inoue should be close enough to prevent him from getting completely comfortable. Ilium and Pure Winner figure to get particularly attractive trips immediately behind that pair, with Patrol attempting to make his run later.
Projected Winner
Top Selection: Inoue
Inoue combines the strongest package of course-and-distance form, current condition and proven higher-class experience. His July 2 Ellis Park victory demonstrated that today’s one-mile dirt configuration suits him, and his subsequent workouts suggest Royalty Stables has maintained his form exceptionally well.
Main Danger: Ilium — His recent one-mile win and Grade III runner-up finish make him the most compelling alternative.
Best Value: Patrol — Already competitive with Inoue over this course and distance and enters from a sharp one-mile work.
Live Longshot: Bahamut — Three victories from five starts this year and enough tactical speed to become dangerous if allowed to control the tempo.
Final Recommendation
1st — Inoue
2nd — Ilium
3rd — Patrol
4th — Pure Winner
