1 3/16 Mile Turf Stake Purse $600.000 Filly & Mare 3 Year Olds And Up.
It’s this sort of race that is very tough for a horseman to watch at HRP. It wasn’t the fact that the three year olds once again dominated their more accomplished older rivals, it wasn’t the fact that after 9 and 1/2 furlongs only three lengths separated the winner form the last place filly it was the fact that both happened at the same time and it is becoming a pretty regular thing. The important thing at the end of the day is who won and how i guess and for that lets have a look at the first four home.
1st Easier Said Mb Stables Bejarano R
I felt that this filly was ready to run big here after a good fourth in the BEL Oaks despite having to find a few lengths with some of her rivals on that form. The draw was the key in that race as she went from gate 12 and in todays game that is the difference between winning and losing. Today she was drawn snug on the rail and despite having to make a few moves to get some clear air she ran home really strongly for a half length win. She will certainly have a chance with a good draw in the BC but its that lottery that will decide her fate.
2nd Number Nine Spankys Barn Van Dyke D
How good is this filly running a close second in a grade one on only her fourth start. Still her only win has come at the free track but this was a massive performance after stalking the lead and with any sort of due improvement she looks set to be a contender in the months to come.
3rd I Justwantthe Purple Gdp Inc Pennington F
The fact that this is a four year old and she was beaten under a length just goes to show how good she is. Taken way off the pace she flew home to grab a deserved third and if she can make the BC will be one of the best chances of the older generation.
4th Stormy Embrace Mb Stables Velazquez J R
Came on really strongly at the end and now gives her trainer a bit of a dilemma with the BC approaching. In this her first and only start on the turf she ran well enough to be considered for the BC turf but she has a long way to go to get into that race whereas on the dirt she already has a grade two win to her name.
