When the $400.000 Breeders Stakes was drawn, there was a strong possibility that the field could see some defections if the ground came up anything other than firm. Well, the rains came and, with the 12-furlongs set to be run over soft going, Sinissippi Rubicon and Sovereign Leader were withdrawn. So a field of four went postward at WO; however, only one of them did any real running as Abominable went to the front and improved his position throughout the trip around the WO turf course.
Sent immediately to the lead, Abominable cruised through fractions of :49.34, 1:14.25, and 2:05.78 before crossing the wire in 2:33.07. The only real drama in the race was which Arindel runner would run second and third as after the horses reached three-quarters, Grand Command started a retreat that would see him finish some 25-lengths behind the winner. Abominable held a lead of four lengths or more at every pole of the race but Manchild and Hint Of Sugar battled each other throughout the race. In the end, Abominable crossed the wire four lengths in front of Manchild who was three lengths in front of stablemate Hint Of Sugar. It was another 17-lengths back to Grand Command.
With the win, Abominable (Fire N Fury o/o Change Perception) improves his career record to 15-5-1-2 for earnings of $555.300. Congratulations to Abominable and Mb Stables for their victory in the $400.000 Breeders Stakes at WO!
