The field moved into the gate for the 2023 KYD on this cloudy but warm evening in Louisville, the flag was up… off and running in the KYD!

As they go under the wire for the first time, World Of Outlaws away fastest of all and takes the early lead, Jacks Courage right behind him, Terabyte from the outside,   Gorogue Laga next to him, then Sinamaulu between horses, back towards the outside to Quiet Return, down to the rail to Prevent, then Sirius Black.  High In Hollywood on his inside, then to the rail for Times Ticking on the outside of Cross Examination.  Deep State, Noble Faerie on his outside, back towards the inside to Blue Duck the Hiei between that pair, Bold Ruler is next, Keep Me Apprised, Terran Destiny, Apache Rise Again and Shoo Fly is the early trailer.

Moving around the clubhouse turn and nearing the run down the backstretch, six furlongs to travel and World Of Outlaws continued to show the way by two lengths.  Jacks Courage content to mark that one, then another two back to Sinamaulu on the rail, Terabyte on his outside, and Gorogue Laga between that pair.  Noble Faerie moving up on the outside of that trio, Quiet Return toward the inside of that one, down to the rail for Prevent and Sirius Black between them.  Two more lengths back to a wide Apache Rise Again, High In Hollywood towards his inside, then Times Ticking and Cross Examination on the rail.  Deep State on his flank, Hiei out wider, to the rail for Blue Duck, Terran Destiny next to that one, then Bold Ruler, Keep Me Apprised and Shoo Fly could still see them all.

Down the backstretch and into the far turn with three and a half furlongs to go, World Of Outlaws continuing to make every more… front, now that gap was a length and a half to Jacks Courage.  Noble Faerie with a burst to now be third, Gorogue Laga towards his inside, Sinamaulu on the rail, Terabyte on his outside as Quiet Return moves out wider and starts to inch up.  Back inside to Prevent, Sirius Black right there, Apache Rise Again out wide and being asked, down to the rail for Times Ticking, High In Hollywood next to him, then to the rail for Cross Examination.  Deep State inching up, Blue Duck on the rail, Hiei out wider, then Terran Destiny, Bold Ruler, Keep Me Apprised and Shoo Fly still the back marker.

Around the far turn and into the lane, the field neared the three-sixteenths pole and the complexion of this one was changing quick as time had come to find out who wanted this mile and a quarter distance… Jacks Courage up to take the lead, Gorogue Laga now second as World Of Outlaws had seen enough… Quiet Return moving very quickly down the center, then back to the inside for Prevent.  Apache Rise Again now taken to the outside and responding to the sting of the whip, Noble Faerie being asked for more, Cross Examination shortening along the rail, and High In Hollywood moving up on the far outside with Times Ticking moving forward along the inside.  Terabyte was next, Sinamaulu tiring along the rail, Bold Ruler just not responding, Sirius Black, Terran Destiny, Deep State trying to rally, Keep Me Apprised and Shoo Fly.

Deep stretch and to the finish… we had a horse race as they neared the sixteenth marker… Jacks Courage on fumes, Quiet Return moving up quickly and looking to be in full stride and now Apache Rise Again closing fast down the far outside as Gorogue Laga tried to find more… but as they fell under the shadow of the finish line, this was all about Quiet Return and the Allinthegate owned gelding held off all of the late charges and went under the wire in front by a neck, delivering the trainer a well-deserved victory.  Apache Rise Again was gaining late but ran out of real estate, settling for the place, a half length better than Jacks Courage, that one certainly showing courage to the wire.  High In Hollywood was a quarter length back in the minor money position, a neck better than Gorogue Laga in fifth, the a head to Times Ticking in sixth, Deep State seventh, a (HRP embarrassment) triple dead-heat for eight between Blue Duck, Prevent and Sirius Black, the a head to Terra Destiny in eleventh, Hiei in twelfth, another dead-heat (because who can have enough of those) for thirteenth between Noble Faerie and Cross Examination, Keep Me Apprised in fifteenth, Shoo Fly sixteenth, World Of Outlaws tiring to be seventeenth, Bold Ruler eighteenth, Terabyte nineteenth, and Sinamaulu closed this one out.

Quiet Return is a gray three-year-old gelded son of Graveyard – Return of Mai Mia, by Cherokee Sunset, and he was bred by his owner, Allinthegate, in California.  This was his fourth lifetime win, first win of his sophomore campaign, and he now shows lifetime earnings of $3,042.200.

It should be noted that his dam is owned by Mb Stables, and was on lease for the mating of this monster.

Congrats to Allinthegate and all of the connections!

A quick word with the owner, post-race surely told the story of the gelding being on his toes and ready for the distance as he was “…narrowly missing against real good times so I felt that he just needed to relax a little bit at the start, stay out of trouble, and have something left at the end.”… something left, indeed!  Despite the rather wide trip, he avoided most of the traffic and “…by not pressing the pace too hard but staying within striking distance he was able to hold off the hard chargers at the finish.”, and again that is spot on, as they closers were making a late charge, but just couldn’t get to him.  This seemed to all be about timing, knowing when to get the horse to the wire “…he is a very consistent horse, and everything worked out great!  Great?  PERFECT!!

Now, it’s on to Baltimore and Old Hilltop… we will see you all there!
