Any Limit ($100.000 Purse)
GP- For Fillies Three Years Old
Six Furlongs on the Dirt
March 17, 2024
On Sunday, the $100.000 Any Limit will take place, but when looking at the field, it doesn’t look much different than a high-level allowance. Those races can be very competitive too, of course, and there are some appealing looking horses amongst this group of six. However, right now, this race does lack some appeal. This will be the tenth time that the race has been run, and it has been for a $75.000 purse for much of its life before increasing to $100.000 in 2022. Abcde was the winner of the 2023 edition for Royalty Stables, but it was the last time she won a race. She’s now a broodmare and has foaled three, but disappointingly, none are named Fghij. Let’s take a look at this year’s field:
1- Looks Pink To Me (Bears Stable, ridden by P Husbands)- Won two of her first three races, including an allowance win where she opened up by five lengths in the stretch only to hang on at the finish. Off of that, she ran in the $100.000 Enchantress Stakes at SUN, for NM-Breds, and was third of four. She’s back to six furlongs from a mile, and I am interested in seeing her run at this distance instead of longer.
2- El Gran Fighter (First Flight Stable, ridden by E Jaramillo)- Broke her maiden here last July, but that still ranks as her only career win. After that race, she would run in ungraded stakes with hit and miss results. The best performance came on the grass at KD for the $500.000 Untapable Stakes, but she was simply unable to build on that third-place effort. This will actually be her first time running in a dirt sprint.
3- Wasted Away (Luz International, ridden by T Gaffalione)- Another filly that broke her maiden here, and for Wasted Away, that was in the slop in December. She has run only one more time since then, and it was an attempt at the Grade 3 Forward Gal. There, she was sixth and missed by a length from the 12-hole, but that’s enough for now to have Luz International move her off of any further KYO preps. Worked nicely here on Valentine’s Day and should be a good bet in this one.
4- Beta Centauri (Riggins Racing, ridden by J R Velazquez)- The only filly in this field that can boast that she has won a stake race. It might not be the most exciting one, the $35.000 AZ Breeders- Fillies, but a stake win is a stake win. Overall, she is two for four, and this is very logical spot for her to go after that victory last month at TUP. Works are good, and she might be looking to do her best running late.
5- Hawaiian Blaze (Fractious, ridden by P Lopez)- After many close calls, Hawaiian Blaze finally broke her maiden in January, scoring a three length win at SA. That’s a victory that saw her take on ungraded company at the $125.000 Valdale Stakes at TP, and she would represent herself well there with a third-place effort. She may eventually take these near misses and go on a winning streak, and she’s in a great barn to be moved forward if that happens. But that still remains to be seen. A win here would really help.
6- Complicated Crazy (Fractious, ridden by L Saez)- This will be just the fourth career start for this filly as she comes off a maiden win here last month. Her works are right in line with what her rivals are doing, so she could certainly step up here without any problem. I’m not going to be looking her way, however. But there’s no complicated reason for that, others simply appeal to me a little more.
Prediction: 3-5-1-4
