Aragog Springs the Baxter Stakes Surprise

Aragog delivered a sharp, winning performance in the Baxter Stakes on April 11, 2026, seizing control before the stretch and finishing the job in 1:09.39 for owner-trainer Delta Farms and jockey Ramos A B. Sent off at 8-1, the gray colt improved his record to 2 wins, 4 seconds, and 1 third from 8 starts, and he did it by turning a stalking trip into a decisive late push over the Fonner dirt.

Race Recap

The early tempo was solid with Higgs Poopina quickest into stride and showing the way through the opening fraction of :22.0. Contract Holdout was right there in the first wave, and Brandy Dial tracked close enough to keep pressure on the front. Aragog did not rush to the lead but stayed within striking distance, which proved important as the race developed.

At the half in :45.1, Higgs Poopina was still the target, but Aragog had moved into a stronger attacking position and was clearly the biggest danger. Contract Holdout continued to hold a competitive spot, while Haggis In Texas started to make up ground after racing farther back early. Brandy Dial was still within touch but not advancing as sharply as the top pair.

At :57.1, the race changed shape. Aragog had drawn fully into contention and matched strides with Higgs Poopina, who had done the heavy lifting to that point. Contract Holdout remained stubbornly in the fight. Haggis In Texas was continuing to close and did better than expected, while Poor Mans Song never delivered the late impact many anticipated after going off favored.

From there to the wire, Aragog was strongest. He completed the move with authority, collaring Higgs Poopina and then edging away enough to secure the decision. The race favored the runners who were close but not committed too early, and Aragog got exactly that kind of trip.

Individual Trip Notes

Aragog gave Delta Farms a polished victory. He sat just off the pacesetter, moved forward at the right time, and finished the race with purpose. This was a clean, efficient performance and a clear forward step in sprint company.

Higgs Poopina ran a strong race in defeat. He established control immediately, stayed in front through every call until late, and forced the winner to earn it. He lost nothing in this performance.

Contract Holdout backed up his maiden score with a solid third. He was involved throughout, held his position well, and stayed on respectably against tougher company.

Haggis In Texas outran his odds and deserves mention for it. He was not among the early leaders, but he improved his position and finished with more interest than several shorter-priced runners.

Brandy Dial had a stalking trip and stayed within reach for much of the race, though he could not produce enough late to get into the top four.

Haizum never threatened seriously, but he was not disgraced and stayed on evenly through the lane.

Boggart had won locally in his prior start, but this was a flatter effort. He could not reproduce that same late spark and finished farther back than expected.

Hashtag Haggis was in the mix early enough but could not sustain a meaningful rally and faded out of contention.

Poor Mans Song was the favorite and did not fire. He was positioned toward the back half of the field and never landed a serious blow, making this one of the more disappointing efforts in the race.

Peace Frog never got involved on the dirt and was well beaten late after failing to carry over his prior turf success.
