BC Juvenile Champ Heads To Remsen. Will He Be Twisted?

The Remsen (Grade 2) (KYD)- $300.000 Purse
AQU- For Two Year Olds
One Mile and One Eighth on the Dirt
November 28, 2015

Saturday is truly a great day for two year old racing at the Big A as the eleventh running of the Grade 2 Remsen is set to take place.  It is an opportunity to pick up those always valuable KYD points.  While there will be greater points at stake as we get into prep race season, entry into the KYD can come down to just a few points sometimes, something which all of the trainers know as they bring top quality horses to the race.  One of which is our defending BC Juvenile winner, Carneyman.   He is one of five that come out of that race, which also includes the runner up, Phooeys Ideal.   Others in this field may not have been in the Juvenile, but have had plenty of success in other spots thus far, and then of course, we have a couple who are taking that proverbial “shot in the dark” to see how their young racehorse might stack up.   The end result is a full field of eleven for what should be a great race.  We hope you enjoy it!  Here’s the field!

#1- Ned Isakoff (Jerry Garcia Racing, ridden by J J Castellano)- Good to see that the ol’ sire Il Miglio Fabro is producing both a Remsen runner and a Demoiselle runner.  Catch a Rising Star (Who, by the way is an Il Miglio Fabro foal himself) is the only other sire that can make that claim this year.  Ned Isakoff was last seen finishing 8th in BC Juvenile, but was within a length.  He still only has one win to his credit, but put together in an effective runner up performance at the sloppy Champagne in order to get into the race.  Castellano is back in the saddle again, and should give this colt another strong run.

#2- Atomic Titty Twister (Blushing Meadows, ridden by J Alvarado)- This colt by Rene is also just a winner of one race so far, but has been together several other good performances.  In early September he was a respectable second to Grandeur in the Grade 1 Hopeful at SAR, and then placed third in a strong $500.000 FL Sire Stakes event (the In Reality).   These results were able to get him to the BC Juvenile, and in that race, he was seventh, but only missed by a length.  He and Ned Isakoff nearly dead heated for that position.   His KEE mile work was an eye opener, and he recently worked impressively over six furlongs here at AQU.  He will absolutely be a contender for a win here.

#3- Carneyman (Broken Spoke Stables, ridden by M A Pedroza)- Our reigning BC Juvenile champion returns to the race track as the trainer sets his eyes on the next big prize, the TC.  Carneyman will have to break the curse that has seemed to have fallen on BC Juvenile winners in the past.  In the meantime, this autogen shows that there is still potential out there when going to that section of the game to get a horse.   Other then the Juvenile win, he was also victorious in the TX-bred $100.000 Sales Futurity, defeating three rivals.  He’s been able to hit the board in the three graded events in between that he has attempted, which include the Grade 3 Iroquois and Grade 1 Breeders Futurity.  We’ll see what he has for us this weekend!

#4- Speeding Prince (Grimley, ridden by J Rosario)- More then likely, the trainer was not expecting to run into so many BC Juvenile winners in this race, but will now get a chance to see where his colt stacks up against them.  He broke his maiden just a week before those others were running in the Juvenile at the same track, coming with a nice closing effort on the turf.  Despite seeming overmatched, there is potential with Speeding Prince, and he worked very nicely over a good AQU surface last week.  He’ll add lasix for the first time.

#5- Rose of the Moon (Mb Stables, ridden by J R Leparoux)- This is an up and coming colt by Hollywood Moon who has won three of his four career starts up to this point.   The first two wins aren’t going to jump out and impress anyone, but he took those two wins, brought them to BEL and ran off with the $250.000 Sleepy Hollow for NY breds in late October.  He earned a 94 SRF for that effort, and looks to build off of that in this race.  He has never met this type of company before, and is probably not the better of the two horses that the trainer brings to the race, but don’t rule him out, entirely.

#6- One City (Mb Stables, ridden by P Lopez)- This colt by the late Steel City has won two of his six career starts, but it is a second place finish that is the most impressive line of his past performances.  As mentioned with Atomic Titty Twister, he took part in the very difficult In Reality Stakes, part of the FL Sire Stakes and its $500.000 purse.  In that race, he was second, and Atomic Titty Twister was third.  Oh, and in case your wondering who won that race, that would have been Champagne Supernova, who you will recall won the $1,000.000 DED Jackpot last weekend.  Time will tell just where One City’s career might be heading, as other then that race his resume isn’t as glowing.  If he’s a late bloomer, this is a name to remember.

#7- Lucky Santa (Aer Stables, J S Rocco Jr)- Horse selling park at its finest has been in play as this colt with Santa in its name has had its trainers in a giving mood, as in giving it away in a sale.  Lucky Santa was sold three times as a yearling, but finally got a chance to race for trainer number four, BomBay Stables.  He raced there for four races until he was sold again, recently purchased by Aer Stables for $100.000.  Regardless of what happens in this race, let’s hope he sticks around in this barn for a while.  As for his chances, he will be a longshot with two wins in four races, on a modest maiden win and the other coming in a quality KEE allowance.  He has simply never met the type of field he sees today.

#8- Phooeys Ideal (LionKing Stables, ridden by J Talamo)- This colt was coming with a vengeance late in the BC Juvenile.  At six furlongs, he was 12th of 14, and six lengths off the lead, but very impressively passed all but Carneyman in the stretch to get a runner up result in that race.  That doesn’t necessarily mean he will look to do the same thing here, as in the race prior, the Grade 1 FrontRunner at SA, he tried to wire the field, and was caught only by Symboli Rudolf.  That means what we do know about him is that he can be good no matter where he in the early going.  It’s worth a mention though that he still only has a maiden win to his credit so far.

#9- Star of India (Red Square Stakes, ridden by T L Dunkelberger)- Seven starts, no wins.  In his last race, he was second in a $19.000 MSW at FL.  I would have preferred to see Cliffs of Moher, that races winner, make this jump.  Don’t knock it, that’s another great one Mb Stables has in his arsenal to be unleashed.  Star Of India just has not raced to his work times.  If he does one day, he can be a good one.  Everyone other then the trainer is going to have to see it to believe it.

#10- Nevski (Barcelona Farms, ridden by R A Baze)- By Brilliantly Awkward, this young gelding has won two of his five career starts thus far.   That is highlighted by a win in the $100.000 Young Memorial Futurity- Colts for LA breds at EVD in July.  In August, he had a seventh place finish in the Grade 3 AP Washington Futurity, but it needs to be noted that he was coming on strong in that race, and at a shorter distance, and only missed by a length.  He was put in an allowance and did similar, but had to run into Intangable Hawaiian that day, and was second.  There is talent with Nevski, but he hasn’t proven he can beat this type of company, only that he can run with them, or after them.

#11- Snowmizer (Sarah Stables, ridden by V Espinoza)- Snowmizer is by Catch A Rising Star, who’s name is perfect for the type of stallion that he is becoming.   So far, he has been in the winners circle twice in five starts, highlighted by his win in the Grade 1 Breeders Futurity at KEE at the beginning of October.  Thanks to that, he got to stick around at KEE for the full month, and ran in the BC Juvenile, but could only muster a tenth place finish.  That was a tight pack to the line, so despite where he was in the running order, he only actually missed by two lengths.  Work times seem to be holding steady, so he should be competitive in this event.

Prediction: 2-3-6-1
