One Mile and Sixteenth

Saturday September 12, 2015

Churchill Downs

Purse: $200.000

We head to Louisville Kentucky the home of Churchill Downs. On opening weekend here at CD two year old fillies will take to the track in the running of the thirteenth running of the GII Pocahontas with a trip to the Breeders Cup on the line. Last year owner Downwind Stables sent out The Reaper who won by a head under Mike Smith in a time of 1:46.19 for the mile and sixteenth. This year we have a field of eight little ladies for Saturday so lets now introduce them.

1) Viking Rush ~ has not been seen since May when she broke her Maiden here over the Churchill Downs main track at odds of 11/1. Grabbing the victory by a neck she has been training all summer for this spot. She debut with Bute and will do so again and gets Shaun Bridgemohan to climb back aboard as owner / breeder Delta Farms hopes the two can hook up again.

2) Panther Prowl ~ makes her way into Saturday off a fourth place finish up at the spa when she ran in the GII Adirondack over a muddy track beaten by two lengths. Prior to those she was a winner of two in a row as she broke her Maiden at Pimlico and took a State Bred Allowance at Woodbine. She has been training at the spa and ships into CD for Saturday. She goes out for owner / breeder Downwind Stables who hopes to pull this race off like the barn did last year. She will be ridden by Jamie Theriot II

4) Jewel In The Sand ~ makes her way into Saturday looking to break her Maiden in a GII event. The last time owner Mb Stables sent this filly out was back in July when she just missed breaking her Maiden against State Breds by a neck at Evangeline Downs. She has been seen training up at Woodbine and now we shall see if she can grab another GII for owner Mb Stables. She will be sent out with Roberto Moralas aboard.

5) Zariba Fever ~ this filly comes out of the GIII Schuylerville where she was tenth beaten by five lengths over a muddy track that day at the spa. In her race prior to that one she was a winner over this very Churchill Down race track to break her Maiden going wire to wire to win by two lengths in the slop. She has been all over the map training and owner/ breeder Riggins Racing hopes she is better than her last one set to fire on Saturday. Martin Garcia climbs aboard for the first time.

6) Zarlandia ~ makes her fourth start on the year here at Churchill Downs on Saturday. This spring she broke her Maiden at Fonner Park going two furlongs, as she then tried the $75.000 Cassidy at Gulfstream Park and was caught in the final furlong to finish second by a head. She then shipped to Woodbine for the $125.000 ONT Debutante Stakes where she was second beaten by a length. Now owner / breeder Serenity Stables hopes for a little luck on her side and grab the spotlight in the winners circle on Saturday. She gets the favorite home base jockey in Calvin Borel to take the ride.

7) Lea ~ a winner against State Bred Maidens at Finger Lakes in her debut back in July was then sent to the spa where she tried the GII Adirondack. In that race she caught a muddy track but ran a good third just missing by a length under Kendrick Carmouche. She has been training up for this in N.Y and now is looking to make a splash here in her third start. A little moister in the track may be what she would like. She will go out for owner / breeder D J C Racing Stables and will be ridden on Saturday by Joe Johnson.

8) Red Rose Of Texas ~ was a winner of two in a row coming into her last start which was in the GII Sorrento Stakes. She was a five length winner in against State Breds at PEN then won at LA by a nose against oclm for $20.000. In the Sorrento Stakes she was the early leader then faded heading for home and finished fifth. Now owner / breeder Joseph Racing hopes she can bounce back here in the Pocahontas. She will get Perry Wayne Ouzts to climb aboard.

9) Wahoos ~ makes her first start for new owner Barcelona Farms. Purchased for $200.000 ownership looks to collect in her first race for the barn. In her last start she broke her Maiden against State Breds at DMR going a mile. She will now look to deliver on Saturday. Barcelona hopes she runs better than her fourth in the slop here at Churchill Downs. She will go out with Miguel Mena aboard.

This is Choppy I am OUT!
