Beat To The Punch Takes Home Sorrento Stakes

GII – Sorrento Stakes

$200.000 Graded Stake 6 1/2 Furlongs on Dirt for Filly Two Year Olds

Despite still being a maiden Mexican was made the post time favorite at 3.5/1 but would ultimately run her most disappointing race of her young career finishing fourth. Stealing the show was the second betting favorite in the race Beat To The Punch. She was near the back of the pack early on in the race but would be able to weave her way to the front under the guidance of jockey Stevens G L.

Early on in the race Sheza Cracker from the far outside did her best to take control of the early pace. But as they ran down the DMR backstretch a group of horses to her inside that included Mesquida, Power Of Prayer, Sweeping Slew and Country Cheer wouldn’t let her clear and down to the rail. Ultimately that would be both Mesquida and Sheza Cracker‘s downfall as they ran around the far turn four and five wide and would eventually fade finishing eighth and seventh respectively.

As they turned for home Beat To The Punch was able to slide in along the rail and then split in between Sweeping Slew and Power Of Prayer pulling ahead in the last handful of strides.

Having to swing seven wide down the lane but still finishing a very strong second was Ambiguity. Rounding out a strong top three was Sweeping Slew for Toppedout.

Finishing fourth was the post time favorite Mexican who had a wide trip around the final turn. Following him in order was Power Of Prayer, Phobos, Sheza Cracker, Mesquida, Iris Nebula, Growling In The Wind and Country Cheers.

Congratulations to everyone behind the impressive two year old filly Beat To The Punch!
