Berlin took command early and never let the Grade III KY Cup Classic get away from him on March 21, 2026, giving The Sidley Stud a polished victory at Turfway Park under R. M. Hernandez. Sent off as the favorite, the veteran gelding controlled the race through every call and finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.15, adding another graded stakes win to an already deep body of work. It was a front-end performance built on clear race control, measured fractions, and the class to finish the job when the pressure came.
The $300.000 KY Cup Classic for 4-year-olds and upward unfolded over a fast track and produced a race shape that favored a horse able to establish position early and maintain it. The internal fractions of :46.3, 1:10.2, and 1:34.4 show that the tempo was honest, yet Berlin kept enough in reserve to repel the late bid of Fried Chicken and hold the rest safely at bay. Behind the winner, Charlie Jace completed the trifecta, while Speter, The Stranger, and Burger King all had their chances at various stages without being able to match the winner’s final authority.
This was a straightforward and highly effective performance from Berlin. He seized the initiative immediately, controlled the flow, and still had enough left to turn back the late challenge. In a compact field with several accomplished older dirt horses, that kind of race management mattered. He never had to alter his style and was able to carry his speed all the way through the stretch.
Fried Chicken ran the best race of the closers. He was last early, improved his standing by the stretch call, and kept coming to be second. His finish was strong enough to separate himself from the rest of the field, though not enough to reach the winner. Charlie Jace had a good tactical trip in second for much of the race and stayed on for third, but he could not match Berlin once the leader kept finding more.
Speter delivered another honest effort, sitting in range and finishing evenly for fourth. The Stranger never quite found the extra kick that had made him dangerous in earlier starts at Turfway and settled for fifth after racing in midpack. Burger King was involved early and still close at the middle stages, but he faded through the final part of the race after the pace pressure began to tell.
The winner is a son of Ginger Haggis out of Flashy Mach, bred by Patterson Stables (Cal), and owned and trained by The Sidley Stud. With this victory, Berlin raised his lifetime earnings to $4,071.620.
Individual Trip Notes
Berlin went straight to the front, led through every call, and finished with authority to take the KY Cup Classic.
Fried Chicken trailed early, advanced steadily through the latter half of the race, and closed well to secure second.
Charlie Jace tracked the winner throughout, stayed in the hunt to the stretch, and held third.
Speter raced just behind the leading group, remained within range through the major calls, and finished evenly for fourth.
The Stranger sat in the second flight for most of the race and could not produce enough late to threaten the top three.
Burger King showed early speed and stayed involved into the middle stages before weakening late.
