Big Dog Has Plenty of Bite and Zip in The IND Derby

The IND Derby Grade 3

Purse $300.00 For Three Year Olds 1 1/16 on Dirt
Horseshoe Indianapolis, Shelbyville, IN.

Big Dog from John Henry took on a decent amount of support as he stepped up the class ladder again, and again proved he more than belonged by racing gate-to-wire in front of a sizable crowd on Derby Saturday. Purchased for a mere $20 back in June of last year, the three year old colt now has his eyes set on even higher goals after the big win. Congrats to the winning connections! Strike from DJC Racing Stables got pounded at the windows and tried hard the whole way, he even came back on late, but just could not get past the winner. A real gutsy run in second today. Coach McGuirk from Mo Mentum Farm came into this looking for his forth straight victory party and although that’s not happening, his connections should be well pleased with the solid run this guy put in today in finishing third. Bank Robber from Our Athletes made up good ground today, especially noticeable in the last eighth of a mile as he was finding his best stride late. Good job in nailing down the last spot in the superfecta.

Of The Rest;

Magic Fighter from Maxmillion Farm broke a tad slow, got pinched back shortly after and then was forced wide, during an eventful opening quarter-mile. He made up some ground late, but as expected, it was just too much to ask for from his post on the afternoon.

Southwind from Acber Farms also broke a touch flat-footed and then tried to close ground late. He was moving good in the last eighth of a mile but it was too late.

Unique Journey from Waldo used his speed to get into a decent enough early position, but then tired and faded back in a sub-par performance as he dead-heated for seventh place.

Apirana from Mb Stables went off as the favorite and was able to show enough gate speed to get into a good position early. After chasing the winner all the way down the backside and being unable to make any solid impact, he looked to tire and spit out the bit turning into the drive in a less than stellar effort today. It will be interesting to see where the four time winner shows up next.

Term Limits from TwinTowers Racing broke slow, fell seven lengths back at the halfway point and was unable to mount a serious rally today.

Connect The Dots from First Flight Stables was unable to get close today in a dismal effort after taking almost two months off. Maybe he needed the race?
