Bowling Green Looks to Find the Closest to The Jack

Race: Bowling Green – Grade II

Track: Saratoga (Inner Turf) Distance: 1⅜ miles Surface: Firm Turf

Class: Graded Stakes Purse: $250.00 Conditions: 4yo and up, 123 lbs

This is a true stamina test on the inner turf, a configuration that rewards tactical positioning, efficient energy use, and late acceleration. Many of these horses have danced the Grade 1/2 marathon dance for years, and several arrive in peak form.

Pace Shape & Tactical Map

Likely Early Leaders

  • Theegala (#12) — has shown repeated willingness to sit on or just off the lead.
  • King Z (#9) — often breaks sharply and holds position.
  • Tom Kha Gai (#4) — can press or sit second flight.

Mid‑Pack Stalkers

  • Dangerous Fugitive (#7) — ideal stalking style.
  • Kegger (#3) — prefers settling mid‑pack and grinding.
  • Boss Spearman (#2) — tactical but not aggressive.

Closers

  • Whipped (#11)
  • Gold Vault (#5)
  • One Last Punch Line (#10)

Pace Projection

There is no true front‑running burner, meaning the early fractions should be honest but not punishing. That sets the table for:

  • Stalkers with finishing punch, and
  • Grinders who stay all day.

This race will be won by the horse who gets the cleanest mid‑race rhythm and can accelerate from the 3/8 pole.

Here’s how they line up :

1. Central Hawkes Bay

“16May26‑8LRL … G3 … 96 … 6th” “2026: 4 starts, 1 win, 1 second”

A reliable long‑distance turf horse, but his 2026 form is below his 2025 peak (96 vs 92 this year). His best races come when he can sit close and kick, but he’s been flattening late. Work pattern is steady but not sparkling.

Verdict: Competitive but a notch below the top tier.

2. Boss Spearman

“4Jun26‑3SAR … BELGoC‑G2 … 100 … 3rd” “28Mar26‑4GP … PanAm‑G3 … 101 … WON”

Sneaky good. His 100 and 101 figures this year show he belongs. He tends to make a mid‑race move but doesn’t always finish the final furlong strongly at 12f+. Still, he’s consistent and handles firm turf well.

Verdict: Solid exotics player.

3. Kegger

“4Jun26‑3SAR … BELGoC‑G2 … 100 … 2nd” “2May26‑11CD … G1 … 101 … 5th”

One of the most consistent marathon turf horses in the field. He rarely runs a bad race at 12f+. His grinding style is perfect for a race with a moderate pace. He finished strongly behind Dangerous Fugitive last out and is in peak form.

Verdict: Major win threat; top‑3 lock.

4. Tom Kha Gai

“16May26‑8LRL … G3 … 101 … WON” “31Jan26‑5TAM … G3 … 100 … WON”

A versatile, classy gelding who fires almost every time. His 101 last out is elite, and he’s proven at 9–12f repeatedly. He can sit anywhere from 2nd to 5th and still deliver a punch. Work tab is excellent.

Verdict: Strong contender; tactical advantage.

5. Gold Vault

“4Jun26‑3SAR … BELGoC‑G2 … 99 … 4th”

Consistent but rarely wins at this level. His 2026 form is slightly below his 2025 peak. He’s a grinder who needs pace help, and he won’t get it here.

Verdict: Fringe exotics only.

6. Edged Out

“2026: 4 starts, 0 wins, 0 seconds, 0 thirds”

Not in form. His best races were last year. He’s been outclassed in every graded attempt this season.

Verdict: Toss.

7. Dangerous Fugitive

“4Jun26‑3SAR … BELGoC‑G2 … 102 … WON” “21Mar26‑4SA … G3 … 101 … WON”

The sharpest horse in the race. His last three figures: 101 → 100 → 102. He just beat Kegger, Gold Vault, Boss Spearman, King Z, Whipped in the same G2 at Saratoga.

He has:

  • Tactical speed
  • A powerful late kick
  • Proven stamina
  • Perfect form cycle

This is the horse who gets the ideal trip.

Verdict: The horse to beat.

8. Street Sounds

“29Apr26‑1CD … 94 … 2nd” “14Mar26‑3SA … G3 … 97 … 7th”

A talented horse but better suited to shorter turf distances (8–9f). His 12f attempts have been flat late.

Verdict: Distance too far; minor award at best.

9. King Z

“18Apr26‑5KEE … G2 … 99 … WON” “4Jun26‑3SAR … G2 … 97 … 6th”

A classy veteran with multiple graded wins. But his last two races were below his best, and he faded late in the same G2 that Dangerous Fugitive won. Needs a rebound and a perfect trip.

Verdict: Capable but unreliable; use underneath.

10. One Last Punch Line

“2May26‑2AQU … G3 … 98 … 2nd”

A good horse, but his best form is inconsistent. He’s capable of a big run but often finds trouble or flattens late. Hard to trust at 11–12f.

Verdict: Mid‑pack finish likely.

11. Whipped

“28Feb26‑11GP … G2 … 102 … WON” “18Apr26‑5KEE … G2 … 97 … 3rd”

Has back class and a big 102 earlier this year, but his recent races show regression. He’s a closer who needs pace help, and he won’t get it.

Verdict: Could clunk up for 4th or 5th.

12. Theegala

“6Jun26‑6SAR … Manhat‑G1 … 103 … WON”

The wild card. He just won a Grade 1 with a 103 — the highest last‑out figure in the field.

But:

  • That was at 1 3/16 miles, not a true staying trip.
  • He has been claimed twice this year, unusual for a G1 winner.
  • His long‑distance turf form is mixed.

If he stays the trip, he’s dangerous. If not, he fades.

Verdict: Boom‑or‑bust.

SUMMARY

This is a great looking race with lots of interest as these true marathon types slug it out. The car park drawn Theegala showed what a difference a trainer can make last time when taking the grade one Manhatten after being beaten in a claimer two starts before. He is one of two from the champion trainer who saddles King Z here as well who will need to find his old form after two disappointing starts.

One Last Punchline and Dangerous Fugitive are reliable old battlers and will be in the fight for sure but it is probably inside of these that we find the best chances. Edged Out will be looking to continue TwinTowers great stakes form this year with Gold Vault and Keggar sure to be in the race at the end too. Boss Spearman scores the jockey and draw everyone wants so that could be a big marker for his chances and Tom Kai Gai looked back to his brilliant best last time and gets a great gate to try and keep that momentum going.

If I know HRP what looks like a close race where the form criss crosses so much it looks like it will be a ten-horse dead heat, we will see something here have its best day. As to which one that is it is anyones guess.
