Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Preview

Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Purse $1,000.000, Grade 1, One Mile, Turf 2 Year Old Fillies

So we have arrived at the biggest time of the year where some of the best horses in the world will assemble to take a shot at stamping the name champion by their name. In this race I will take a look at the best 2 year old filly turf horses in the game right now. I know this is coming out early and that is because there are going to be many articles coming out next week and I feel it will be hard to keep up with them, so I decided to break mine up a bit. In this article you will see a small owner profile that may appear different for different owners. This owner profile is used just to give you a small glimpse into how well each owner is doing in the game and their successes in the Breeders Cup. I have also included a horse section which is looking at what the horses have done up to this point in their career to land them in this great spot. I have chosen to cover the top 14 qualifiers as I have been given indication that they are all going to run in this spot. After the post position draw you will see another article for me that outlines that draw talks about some recent works leading up to the race and also get my predictions. I would like to thank all of the owners in this race that got back to me with feedback and information about their horse and Breeders Cup history. This has been a fun article to write and I wish all of you luck! Let’s take a look at the contenders!

Brave has been racing here at HRP since 2013 and you can see the stats above that outline his win percentage and career earnings as well as 2015 earnings. 2015 has been Brave’s best year as far as earnings wise earning over $3,000 thus far. Brave has 4 career graded stakes wins, 3 in Grade 3 races 1 in a Grade 2 race. Brave has been in the BC in the past but was not able to pull out a win last year in the BC mile with Sir Tom but did hit the board. Brave will be searching for his first BC win this year.

Horse:

She was bred in the 1st quarter of 2015 by Kruz out of an unraced Charley Farley mare Pickled Pepper. She is the 3rd foal by Pickled Pepper and the only one to hit the track. She is one of the 7 stakes winners that sire Pickled Pepper has produced. Narly Kruz has started 4 times in her career with 2 of those starts resulting in a win with the other 2 starts both being 2nd place finishes. She started her career racing in on May 27th this year in a MSW race at WO where she ran a game 2nd going 5 furlongs on dirt. She then came back and got on the turf on July 25th at DMR going 5 furlongs in a MSW and she took the field gate to wire to break her maiden. She propelled herself off that win to a nice score going 5.5 furlongs in the Bolton Landing Stakes at Saratoga from the #4 post in August. This win was also in gate to wire fashion. Narly Kruz then decided to stretch her legs a bit and run in the Natalama Stakes at WO going a flat mile on the turf. She showed her normal early zip from the far outside post but got run down late and finished a nice 2nd. Those 4 starts were enough to earn her the top spot for points earners for this race.

Night Rider Stables has been racing here at HRP since 2008 and you can see the stats above that outline their win percentage and career earnings as well as 2015 earnings. 2014 was Night Rider Stables best year as far as earnings wise earning over $15,000 but this could be passed in 2105. Night Rider Stables has 50 career graded stakes wins, 32 in Grade 3 races 11 in a Grade 2 races and 7 in Grade 1 races. When asked about his Breeder’s Cup starters and winners Night Rider Stables told me “I am not sure but Ii feel like I’ve had less than 10 BC starters with my best placing being 3rd in last year’s BC sprint with my homebred Caymanas Park.”

Horse:

She was bred in the fourth quarter of 2014 as a yearling by Really Sweet out of a Flaming Pretense mare that earned $15.68 named Wild Childe. Childe of Nature is the first foal from this mare and is the only foal to make it to the track. Really Sweet has produced 50 foals and 2 of those 50 foals have went on to become stakes winners. Childe Of Nature started has started 4 times with 3 of those starts being wins. Breeder Barcelona Farms did not think much of her as she was started for the first time at a free track where she finished 2nd. She was then moved to LAD on June 20th where she ran a 5 furlong dirt race in a $12.50 MCL. She got up to the wire just in time to win by a nose. Off that win She was given 2 months off and then transferred to AP where she was in for an $16 claiming tag in a 5.5 furlong turf claiming race. She was very confident in her victory on that day, and Night Rider Stables saw something he liked before that race and dipped in and claimed her. Once in the Night Rider Stables she posted a fast 6 furlong work and was then stepped up to the Grade 2 Natalama Stakes going a mile on the turf. She responded well to the step up in class and won the race, running down the pace setter Narly Kruz late and pulled away in the end for the victory.

Spirit Of Broomstick is lightly bred with only 12 foals and Lady Lois Of Wynne is his lone stakes winner. She started her racing career on the dirt in a MSW race at ALB on May 6th, where she finished a nice 2nd. She was given just over a month off and came back and raced again on the dirt this time 5.5 furlongs at CD on June 11th where she finished 3rd. Owner Drabfantasy had seen enough of her in MSW races at the point and brought her back 9 days later in the Victoria Stakes going 6 furlongs on turf where she finished 2nd. On July 30th she was moved to SAR where she tried a 5.5 furlong turf MSW race over the soft ground where she again finished 2nd. That was the last time this horse would see a maiden race as she was then moved into stakes company again on the turf. She then raced 4 times in less than a 2 month period starting on August 16th in the Colleen stakes where she finished 6th. She then went to the Johnson which was her first time going a route of ground and she responded with a 3rd place finish. She then came back on September 27th in the Ms Grillo Stakes going a mile and 1/16th on the turf and she closed hard and pulled away in the end to win by ¼ of a length. She wasn’t given much time off, and came right back on October 7th in the Jessamine Stakes where she missed the board.

She is the 11th foal out of this mare that has had 6 horses get to the races, with 3 of them being winners, and 2 stakes winners. Australia Wide purchased this horse for $100 on June 23rd 2015 before she had been raced. She started her racing career on July 26th going 5.5 furlongs on turf in a MSW race at ELP. She led early in that race but faded a bit to finish in a dead heat for 2nd. She was given just over a month off to rest up and then she was stretched out to a MSW race on September 5th going a mile on the turf at DMR where she dominated the field and led gate to wire winning by 4+ lengths. That race was enough to show the talent that she had and she was then stepped right up into the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes. In this race she stalked the pace early and stormed away late for a powerful victory.

She is the 2nd foal from this mare and the only one to reach the track. She is 1 of 4 stakes winners that has been produced by Brilliantly Awkward out of 124 foals. She responded well and won that race. She was then given some time off and her next start came on June 27th at CD going 6 furlongs on dirt in the Debutante where she finished 6th. Second Chance Farms then decided to make a surface switch with her and moved her to DMR where she ran a mile turf stakes race in the OT Juvenile Fillies Turf. It looks like at this time Eastern Equine had enough of the dirt with her and moved her to LAD on July 9th where she went 7.5 furlongs on turf in a MSW race and she responded with a dominant 5 length win. Halo Thoroughbreds has 2 career graded stakes wins, 1 in Grade 3 races 0in a Grade 2 races and 1 in Grade 1 race.

I caught up with Halo Thoroughbreds and asked him about Irish Lass and he stated “I don’t know if she can get the distance. Normally, I don’t put my horses in where they have no shot, but this is the Breeders Cup & anything can happen. She is training very well right now & if she gets in the field well give it our best.”

Horse:

She was bred in the 4th quarter of 2014 as a yearling by Celtic out of a Northern Pacific mare, Laydees Secret who did not earn anything at the track. She was the 6th foal from this mare who has had 6 horses make it to the races with 5 winners and 1 stakes winner. The sire has produced 5 stakes winners from 74 foals. She started her racing career on April 4th at FON in a MSW race going 2 furlongs where she broke her maiden at first asking. She was then given 2 months off and shipped to LAD on June 18th where she raced in an allowance race going 5 furlongs on the dirt where she finished 3rd. She was then moved to AP on July 12th and switched to the turf where she ran in a 5 furlong allowance race and just missed finishing 2nd by a neck. She was then shipped to EVD on July 31st where she again went 5 furlongs on turf in an allowance race but she came out victories in this race. She was then stepped up off that win and shipped to MTH on August 16th where she ran in the Colleen stakes going 5 furlongs on the turf and she again responded with a win. She was then shipped to WO for a September 12th race going a mile on the turf in the Natalma Stakes where she finished 8th.

Here is what Red Square Stable told me about Last Train To Tulas, “Last Train to Tulsa has never been out of the money in her 3 runs to date and ran a decent 3rd in the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes to give her a shot at a place in the BC Filly Juvenile. The well conformed 2yo by Last Tycoon is training well but I am not as optimistic about her as I am hopeful for my other runner in the colt division of the same race (Laffin Attack). I’d like to suggest who will win the filly race but it is difficult to predict what with training times appearing to have no bearing on ability and racing. A place would be an achievement.”

Horse:

She was bred in the 4th quarter of 2014 as a yearling by HRP-Last Tycoon from the HRP mare HRP-Grey Flight. The mare has produced 84 foals with 56 going to the races and 29 of those winning. She has also produced 3 stakes winners. The sire has produced 3 stakes winners out of 70 foals. She started her racing career April 17th at PEN on the free side in a MSW on dirt going 4.5 furlongs in a race she lost by 1 length. She was then given a large chunk of time off to grow and didn’t return to the races until August 9th where she shipped to ELP where she raced in a MSW race going 1 mile on the turf and responded with a powerful win by 4 lengths. She was then given just over a month off and shipped up to WO and ran again going a mile on the turf in the Grade 2 Natalma stakes where she was able to hit the board and finish 3rd by 2 lengths, which got her into this race.

Here is Aarons Hosses commenting on You Gotta Believe, “The horse is a more natural sprinter, but maxing out the distance meter led to a nice finish in the Miss Grillo, so hoping a 1/16th shorter and less rushed preparation can yield another move forward. Fingers crossed!”

Horse:

She was bred in the 2nd quarter of 2015 by Walking Dead out of a Too Native mare, Dune Nation who did not earn anything at the track. She was the 3rd foal from this mare who has had 3 foals make it to the races with 2 of them winning with 0 stakes winners. The sire produced 1 stakes winner from 125 foals. She started her racing career May 20th at EVD in a MSW going 5 furlongs on the dirt where she finished a nice 2nd. On June 18th she was shipped to CD where she ran in another MSW going 5.5 furlongs over the slop which she did not like and finished 8th. On August 12th she went to DMR to run in another MSW race but this time it was on turf and she finished 2nd. She was not given much time off and entered again at DMR on August 28th in a 5 furlong turf MSW race which she ended up winning. She was then shipped to BEL and after just over a month off she was entered into the G3 Ms Grillo Stakes where she managed to hit the board and finished 3rd. She was then shipped to KEE where she ran in an allowance race on October 11th that she won going a mile and 1/16th on the turf in which appeared to be a move to secure a spot in this race.
