It was a busy Sunday of stakes action down at SUN but it was Woogaloo that pulled off the biggest shocker of the afternoon. Sent off at the longest odds in the field of five, Broomsticks Happy utilized a stalk and pounce trip to surprise his rivals and claim the $120.000 NMSU Stakes. Completing the 1-mile and 70 yards in 1:39.63, Broomsticks Happy just got the nod over Country Model. The 7yo winner now has earnings of $183.230 with three wins from seven starts.
Racing on the inside of Raleigh In Doubt, Broomsticks Happy was able to track the pace set by Hachita. Never further than a length away, the eventual winner enjoyed a comfortable trip as the leader clicked off fractions of :24.07 and:47.76 for the first quarter and half mile, respectively. As Hachita rounded the final bend, he was engaged by Raleigh In Doubt and Broomsticks Happy.
Raleigh In Doubt, traveling three-wide, hit three-quarters in 1:11.49 but was under pressure as Broomsticks Happy and R. Chirinos split horses to fully launch his bid. As Broomsticks Happy began to edge away from Raleigh In Doubt, Country Model was making a dangerous move up the rail. Broomsticks Happy dug in and kept Country Model at bay and hit the wire a full neck in front of his rival. Raleigh In Doubt continued to battle and earned the show over Ideal Lion. Hachita completed the order of finish just a length and a half from the winner.
Congratulations to Broomsticks Happy and Woogaloo for their victory in the NMSU Stakes at SUN.
