Make that THREE in a row… Canadian Racing’s Rock Warrior galloped along at the back for most of Saturday’s Ballston Hcp (GII) but she knows where the wire is and she knows how to hit it first. Closing quickly, she cleared the field and went on to win by a length in a final time of 1:39.84 for the mile and a sixteenth over the inner turf course here at The Spa. Speculate was second at 18/1 odds and Tropical Kiss completed the $88.10 trifecta.
The field of five were away in good order with Mortal Lock showing good early speed from between horses, Fashion Lane to her inside Speculate on the outside. Another length back to Rock Warrior from the hedge and Tropical Kiss from the far outside. By the stands the first time and now dashing off into the clubhouse turn with five and a half furlongs to run, the two long-shots were showing the way – 56/1 Mortal Lock on the front, 18/1 Speculate right along side, then a length back to Fashion Lane, gap of three back to Rock Warrior and Tropical Kiss right next to her, five lengths covered the field. Down the backside and nearing the far turn, they went past the three-eighth’s pole and Speculate was now in front by a length. Mortal Lock from the rail in second, two lengths back to Fashion Lane, gape of two more back to Rock Warrior and Tropical Kiss still at the rear, now six lengths from the front end. Around the turn and past the three-sixteenths pole, the short run down the lane and to the wire with Speculate in front by almost three lengths. The trio of Rock Warrior from the rail, Mortal Lock between horses, Fashion Lane three wide, all giving chase, then two more by to Tropical Kiss swinging out very wide for the run to the wire. Deep stretch and to the finish, Speculate trying to pull the upset, Rock Warrior let out and now closing with every long stride, Fashion Lane could do no better, Tropical Kiss making a bit of a late run and Mortal Lock had folded up shop… but as they neared the wire, Rock Warrior went right on by Speculate and scored by a widening length. Tropical Kiss continued on well for third Fashion Lane in fourth and Mortal Lock used up in the pace, was last. Rock Warrior is a 5yo bay mare by Iroquois Warrior – Rockin Cara by Rockin Concern, and she was bred by her owner, Canadian Racing, in ON. As mentioned, this was her third win in a row and she now shows nine wins from twenty-one lifetime starts and earnings of $1,431.540. She looks to be on her best form at the right time of the year and you may see a return trip on BC Day for this one.
