Champsville Sweeper Wins Another NM Stakes

September 26, 2016

A small field of two-year-olds took to the ALB main track for the NM Thoroughbred Futurity and Champsville Sweeper used all of his class and talent to score a docile win at 1-2, running down the speed while holding off the filly Yardstick by a length. From the same crop as stakes winner Dragonville II, he know hows three state-bred stakes wins and more than $320.000 in career earnings for owner Axeman, who are known for their fillies and mares but look to have a big gelding on their hands here.

Haynes Away (2.80) broke like a rocket and secured a clear lead from Champsville Sweeper (*0.50) and Yardstick (523.70) and as Fuego On Hold (3.05) dropped well off the pace, you knew the fractions were going to play a huge factor by the end. Five-lengths in front through the first split in 22.07, Haynes Away was still in control but Champsville Sweeper was making his move and around the turn, the half-mile in 45.01 was simply too fast for this level of competition and it looked like only a matter of time before the back markers came calling. With a furlong to run, the lead had been reduced to a length and as Yardstick tried to muscle her way through, it was still Champsville Sweeper with all the momentum and he was able to power home to a one-length score over the filly, with Fuego On Hold just getting up for third over a tired Haynes Away.

Champsville Sweeper was supposed to win the NM Thoroughbred Futurity and did so with a big closing kick but his 90-speed rating still needs to be improved upon if he is to be considered for some of the biggest races of the year including the BC Juvenile. The NM Classic Juvenile has to be the next step for him at this level and unless he can show some zip going long, this type of race is perfect for him to pad his bankroll.
