Commanding Chai: First Victory, First Stakes in Maid Of The Mist

Maxmillion Farm saw the opportunity to continue allowing his juvenile filly to control the pace here at Aqueduct in the Maid Of The Mist, and going gate to wire from a more suitable inside post paid dividends for Commanding Chai.

  • Maid Of The Mist Purse $250.000
  • Aqueduct Racetrack- For Fillies Two years old, Foaled in NY
  • One Mile- Main Track

For any horse/trainer/jockey combination it is a great feeling to give that thoroughbred their very first visit to the winners enclosure. For Commanding Chai, she not only would break her maiden, but snatch up a nicely priced stakes title and doing it all in a style she continues to use to compete in events. Many thought the 10-1 filly was not going to be able to carry her running style an additional two furlongs over her last maiden try, but with the help of Cedillo in the irons, the duo hung on to win by a neck in the photo. Obviously trainer Max knew that others would not look to go out on the lead for this event with the distance, but he stuck with his instructions and he out guessed this field. An amazing way to start this filly on her way. ” I knew we had to put away the runner from the Frizette,” Max said following the race, ” And that’s just what we did.”

Pressing all the way to the wire, La Canada Racehorses Sweet Charis had already competed in two back to back milers leading up to this event, with one being the Gr. I Frizette. Was patient to bide her time till the stretch run, and she would only be denied in the photo finish, placing second. Has two wins and a runner-up finish in her past five since coming over to this owner, and I predict she will add one more victory before years end.

Show placing was D J C Racing Stables Local Glitter who narrowly beat Winegum Wishes ( Crocker Ggs ) in the photo. This was Local Glitter’s first route event and she was coming off an Alw64 win. For D J C, he would have 22 runners on the day, no success here at AQU but would pick up a win at TUP and PRX. As for Winegum Wishes, she would have loved to have added her third career victory in five starts and get her name on everyone’s tongue, but i can tell you she has made it into many handicappers notebooks.

Rounding out the event were Forty Chai ( Estero Farms ), Flying Swan ( The Sidley Stud ), Watherrah ( Team 7 Illusions ) and Chili Star ( Chili King Stables ).
