For the first time in their stable history, Ire Iron Stables is a graded stakes winning trainer as Crypto King came through with the win in the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes. This was not a surprise, as the gelding had been knocking on the door of accomplishing this, and he would be our pick to win. Based on this performance, this will likely not be the first time we report on Crypto King winning a graded race as his winning time of 1:20.90 is a stake record for this race when it has been held at seven furlongs. Our congratulations go out to Ire Iron Stables on this accomplishment! Jockey F Pennington is the winning rider, and it’s his first win in the race. Let’s take a look at how this happened!

(1/4 Mile- :22.56)- Fire Chase goes to the front for Mb Stables, and will have the field cleared by about a length and a half. Imposing Scenario gets a comfortable position in the second spot for The Sidley Stud, and within a length to his inside is our eventual winner from Ire Iron Stables, Crypto King. There’s not much separating the next three, though they are positioned about five across the track. Spankys Barn’s Normandy is there, with The Sidley Stud’s Hard Worker giving himself hard work by being five wide, and A Boy Named Kate, from Winning Link Stables, is also a part of this group. It’s then a length and a half to Smooth River (Serenity Stables) and Tony T (Rock Creek), who run evenly. The trailers are Laffin Wolf (Mojica Racing) and Kalashnikov (D J C Racing Stables).

(½ Mile- :45.62)- Down the backstretch, Fire Chase is still in control of the race, as he is able to maintain his length and a half advantage on both Imposing Scenario and Crypto King. Behind them, Normandy is looking to position himself to the outside of the previous two as Hard Worker gets caught out wide. Closer to the rail, there’s plenty of room for A Boy Named Kate to capitalize on, if he was able to actually take advantage of it. Tony T follows by a length, with Smooth River next. At the back, still nothing yet from Laffin Wolf or Kalashnikov.

(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- The field rounds the turn and enters the stretch, with surprisingly little activity happening while in the turn. Perhaps this is good news for Fire Chase in front, as he can hold is length advantage into the stretch, but he still has not been able to get away from either Imposing Scenario or Crypto King. Between those two, we have not seen either quite look to pounce and push for the top spot, but they have both been in great position to do so. Normandy loses a little ground to them, however Hard Worker loses more. A Boy Named Kate has simply not been able to take advantage of all the room he had to make a run. Tony T is getting closer to the rest of the pack, but Smooth River seems to have nothing left. Laffin Wolf is positioned to make a run, but will it actually come? Kalashnikov still trails, but is another horse with a clear lane directly in front of him.

(Finish- 1:20.90)- In the stretch, will it be the trainer with over a thousand graded wins taking home what would actually be his first Vigil Stakes win, or will it be the underdog out of Ire Iron Stables? That imposing scenario was not too difficult for our third place runner who also still had a good shot. Fire Chase, the post time favorite, was not going to down without a fight, but in the final moments of the race, it was our favorite and pick to win, Crypto King, grabbing the crown of the race as makes the pass in the final moments for what will truly be a memorable moment for the first year stable. And as stated in the opening, this looks like a horse that’s going to be winning some more of these, too. The veteran Fire Chase ran a good race, and did nothing wrong in his second place effort, and it’s Normandy slipping by Imposing Scenario in the closing moments for show. The rest of the order will read Hard Worker, Tony T, Kalashnikov, Laffin Wolf, A Boy Named Kate, and Smooth River.

About The Winner- Crypto King, trained by Ire Iron Stables and ridden to victory by F Pennington, is a four year old gelding by Crypto Investor and is out of Tanque Verde. He was bred in Kentucky by LionKing Stables as a second quarter two year old, and was acquired by Ire Iron Stables this February in a $60.00 private sale. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his seventh in 19 starts, and his first stake win of any sort. His career earnings are now $325.03.
