Dan Patch is No Jug-Head, Takes Mazarine BC Stakes at WO

11/22/2020

2   WO   Mazarine BC Stakes (GIII)
     $125.000        2yo F        1 1/16m  Dirt         2yo 120lbs  +penalties

At least I finally nailed down a winner…  Dan Patch looked the one to me in Sunday’s Mazarine BC Stakes (GIII) at WO and sure enough the Waldo trained filly went wire to wire to score by a length in a final time of 1:441 for the mile and a sixteenth on a main strip labeled good.  Just My Imagination was the post time favorite and chased the winner throughout, taking the second spot by a nose over Golden Palace in third.

The field of seven loaded into the gate and were away in good order with Dan Patch on the early gas.  Golden Palace and Just My Imagination towards the inside and giving chase, Carrie Ann, Tomahawks and Amalifi just in behind that group and Red Riding Hood was slowest from the gate.

The field made the run to the clubhouse turn and around that turn with Dan Patch on the lead but unable to move over to the fence as Golden Palace and Just My Imagination were on her inside.  A gap of four back to Red Riding Hood our four wide, Tomahawks on the rail, Amalfi next to her and Carrie Ann was three wide and the back marker.

Down the backside and now into the far turn with three furlongs to run,  Dan Patch now able to go clear by three and get to the rail.  Golden Palace and Just My Imagination continued to chase the leader as Red Riding Hood continued wide.  It was another length and a half back to the trailing trio of Amalfi, Carrie Ann and Tomahawks along the rail.

Around the far turn and nearing the furlong marker, not much of a change as Dan Patch continue to show the way by three, Golden Palace and Just My Imagination continuing to track the leader, Amalfi and Red Riding Hood behind that pair, then another length and a half to Carrie Ann and Tomahawks.

Inside the final 150-yards and to the finish, this was all about Dan Patch as the gray wired the field and went under the wire in comfortable fashion.  Just My Imagination nosed out Golden Palace for the place, then another length back to Red Riding Hood in fourth.  Amalfi was fifth, Carrie Ann sixth and Tomahawks closed this one out.

Dan Patch is a 2yo gray filly by Wicked Moon – Lena, by Kingslayer and she was bred in Cal by her owner, Waldo.  This was her second win from six starts and she now has earning of $191.000.  Congrats to Waldo and Dan Patch.
