Daniel Son Karate Slices His Way to Grey Stakes Win

Grey Stakes (Grade 3)- $125.000 Purse
WO- For Two Year Olds
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
November 22, 2020

Some of the more promising two year olds in the game took to the track on Sunday with the hopes of following the footsteps of many before them that were not able to get into the BC Juvenile but would soon grow to be at the top of the division and a top KYD contender. The field was wide open in the eyes of the betting public, with Sneaky One going off as the post time favorite with odds of nearly 5/1. At the end of the race, it would be the horse that we picked in the preview, Daniel Son Karate, scoring the win at odds of 7/1 for trainer Aer Stables. If this horse had not been on your radar of KYD contenders before, it is time to add him to your list now. The trainer can be counted on to develop horses for the big race, and Daniel Son Karate may chop his way through that list. This is the second time that Aer Stables has won the race, doing so also in 2017 with the late Mistress Seeker. J Stein is now a three time winning jockey, who last won in 2015 with No Doubt About It. On the track that would only be listed as good, the winning time was 1:43.86. Note that Raunchy Bay was a late scratch. Let’s take a look at it!

(¼ Mile- :24.12)- There is no time to wait for Daniel Son Karate, as the Aer Stables entry goes right to the front immediately out of the gate. After battling briefly with stablemate Turbocharged for that spot, he ends up leading by about a length as we move into the opening turn. Sharp Money, from Sccj Stables, begins to move forward from the outside with plans likely of joining Daniel Son Karate at the front. Turbocharged drops into a stalking position, a length off, with three other horses. To his inside, it is Kinch (Whitewater Stables), with The Bounder (The Sidley Stud) on his outside, and Crack Stone (Gdp Inc) one lane further over. In the middle of the field, we find Zero Darkness (Acber Farms) and Sneaky One (Arindel). Proud Crown (Mb Stables) is next, four lengths out, and it’s one more to Party Animal (D J C Racing Stables). At the back, it’s Round Them Up (Williams9).

(½ Mile- :47.96)- Daniel Son Karate will not go wire to wire here, however, as about midway into the turn, he concedes the lead to Sharp Money. Early in the backstretch, he backs off a little more, and into a stalking position to trail Sharp Money by two and a half lengths. Crack Stone had moved up, from having been four wide, to join Sharp Money at the front. Kinch would follow him in the third position while having Daniel Son Karate to his inside. Behind them, Turbocharged and The Bounder ran side by side, with the latter having a nice lane to advance in, if he so chose to take it. Proud Crown was starting to creep up on his outside, but trailed the front runners by about five lengths. Zero Darkness and Sneaky One still ran together, unbothered by the happenings in front of them. Party Animal and Round Them Up did the same.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Perhaps, Daniel Son Karate was just toying with the two near leaders and letting them have some fun at the front, because as the field reached the final turn, the manner in which he charged back to the lead was eye opening and impressive. There was a gap between Sharp Money and Crack Stone, and he simply made it look way too easy as he sliced his way through it. At the top of the stretch, he now took a length and a half lead on the field, and you had to think it was goodnight to the competition to this point. Kinch had made a slower advance, but did not have the same power in his stride as Daniel Son Karate. Proud Crown was looking the best of those in the back, but he had a wide trip and would still have to find a way to make up almost three lengths.

(Finish-1:43.86)- In the stretch, it was time to watch Daniel Son Karate run. He had put the field away, and gracefully ran to the wire, putting his name on the list of KYD contenders for those that still did not have him on it. His win would be a length over Proud Crown, who did have a wide trip for most of this race and should be one to keep an eye on as well. Zero Darkness waited a little too long to put it into gear, but ran well once he did to get third, holding off the late coming Party Admiral. Kinch was passed by these late, keeping him from grabbing a piece of the purse. Rounding out the order it is, Crack Stone, Sneaky One, The Bounder, Turbocharged, Sharp Money, and Round Them Up.

About The Winner- Daniel Son Karate, trained by Aer Stables and ridden to victory by J Stein, is a three year old gelding by Bronx Bomber, and is out of One Dolla. He was bred in New York by Aer Stables as a first quarter two year old, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in four starts, his second stake win, and first graded win. His career earnings are now $132.900.
