Dead Heat in The Hutcheson Stakes

The Hutcheson Stakes ($100.000 Purse)
GP- For Three Year Olds
Six Furlongs on the Dirt
February 22, 2020

The Hutcheson Stakes ran as an ungraded stake for the first time in its history on Saturday, but in some respects the field was not much more then an allowance. The field did not have much stake experience in general, so it would be a great chance for its winner to get that experience and take their career to the next level. The end result would be double that, as we’d have a pair of winners, as both Fracas (for Rampage Stable) and Last Scout (John Henry) finished in a dead heat. For each, it’s their first win in the race. The time was 1:09.30. Let’s follow these two horses through the field as the race took place.

(1/4 Mile- :22.70)- Down the backstretch, there was a little more then three lengths separating our co-winners. Fracas was the closer of the two of the lead, choosing to stalk the pacesetting Keanu Storm (Arindel) and Notoriously Proud (South Beach Racing), and would have company along each side of him. Meanwhile, Last Scout did not start quite as ambitiously, and was content to run near the back of the field. However, jockey J R Leparoux had a nice clear lane right in front of him as we moved closer to the turn.

(½ Mile- :45.49, Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Fracas continued to stalk the leaders into the turn, but as they got closer to the stretch, he would have to move down a lane to avoid the quickly fading Keanu Storm. Notoriously Proud took a wide trip around the turn, leaving room for Fracas, and others, such as Komet (Estero Farms) to come on through. As that was going on, Last Scout continued to have a good trip while running in the third lane, and he started to get closer to the lead. At the top of the stretch, he had two lengths to make up to Fracas, and three overall to the still leading Notoriously Proud.

(Finish- 1:09.30)- Notoriously Proud kept drifting out, allowing plenty of track for most of his rivals here. While Fracas did not really need that, it was very beneficial for Last Scout who was able to simply hold his lane and hope to come on through between both Komet and Notoriously Proud. With half a furlong to go, Fracas had taken the lead, with Komet still running quite well. Last Scout was gaining and gaining. Getting closer to the wire, it was looking like Last Scout was going to get up for the win, but Fracas hung in there the best he could, and after they hit the line together, there was no separating them, and a dead heat was declared. It was close for third to Notoriously Proud nipping Komet at the wire for third.

About The Winners- Fracas, trained by Rampage Stable, and ridden to victory by I Ortiz Jr, is a three year old gelding by Comercial Sis, and out of Amy Winehouse. He was bred in California by Rampage Stable as a first quarter two year old, the only trainer he has ever had. The win is his third in seven starts, and first stake win. His career earnings are now $119.720.

Last Scout, trained by John Henry, and ridden to victory by J R Leparoux, is a three year old colt by Inspector Jacques, and out of Filia Ardross. He was bred in Florida by Keikowin Racing also as a first quarter two year old. He was acquired by the trainer in private sales in June for $35.000. The win is also his third in seven starts and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $101.600.
