Alydar Stables sent Dereliction Of Duty to see the local vet on June 9. He’s done nothing but cross the wire first in three races since. On Thursday at KD, the 2yo son of Dumbell Press (o/o Lunar Surprise) stamped himself a legitimate threat to take the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint with a determined victory over a stubborn Full Speed in the initial $500.000 KD Juvenile Sprint.
Dereliction Of Duty sat 2nd while racing four-wide as Touch Of Irish led the field through the opening quarter-mile in :22.65. On his immediate inside, Full Speed was racing in third while tracking the eventual winner as well as his stablemate on the lead. When Touch Of Irish, racing in the silks of Mb Stables, reached the half-mile point in :45.39 his lead was a length over the still wide Dereliction Of Duty.
When they reached the furlong marker, Dereliction Of Duty and Touch Of Irish were on even terms as the latter’s stablemate decided to put in his run from in between the front-runners. When Dereliction Of Duty reached the 1/16 pole, his lead was a half length over the barnmates on his inside. The final 100 yards were an absolute dogfight as Dereliction Of Duty and Full Speed (making only his second career start) went nose to nose with the former never allowing his rival to get his nose in front but never able to put any real seperation between them. It was a fierce battle, but Dereliction Of Duty got the neck victory over his ultra-game foe as he crossed the wire in 1:14.50 for the 6.5 furlongs over the firm KD turf. It was a half length back to Touch Of Irish in 3rd as the formerly undefeated colt refused to wilt when he was confronted with a challenge. Completing the order of finish were Crack The Pink, Stormcoat, Talisheek, Han Solo, White Walker, and Doctor Divo.
With the win, Dereliction Of Duty improved his record to 5-3-0-1 for earnings of $387.200 and increased his BC point total to four. For his runner-up effort, Full Speed was rewarded with his first BC point. Unfortunately for Touch Of Irish, no BC points were awarded for his show result and his total holds firm at two points.
