Diablo Diablo Goes Old School, Takes BC Juv Fillies Turf …Again

9   SA    BC Juvenile Fillies Turf (GI)

$1,000.000    2yoF      1m      Turf           Weight 122lbs

The 2019 BC Juvenile Fillies Turf – Grade I  proved to many of us that speed, in fact, is not dead.  Pirate Petranella broke alertly, took over at will and held all foes safe in the late going to win by a length in a final time of 1:333 for the flat mile on the lush SA lawn.  The race takes us back to when Diablo Diablo won the very first running of this race with Faithful Pet, back in 2008.  Scent Of A Filly and Reminisce used alike tactics to close from middle positions to take the second and third spots, while Di Etti closed from far back to be fourth.

The full field of fourteen fillies loaded into the gate in front of the large throng here in SoCal, and away from the gate with Jump on the early lead.  Noel Hickey to his inside, Pirate Petranella from the outside, and Hollywood Do Over away well.  Unmistakable from the extreme outside, back down to the rail for Hollywood Creek, Mesquite and Reminisce along side each other, then Slipdamaloo, Scent Of A Filly and Real Speed back towards the inside, Textes From My Exes, Di Etti and Audrey Hepburn was away slowest of all.

The field made their way into the clubhouse turn and now had six furlongs to run, the opening quarter in :231 and D Davis was on the gun with Pirate Petranella, now in front by a length but caught five wide.  Jump to her inside, followed by Hollywood Do Over, Noel Hickey and Hollywood Greek still saving ground.   Also caught five wide, Slipdamaloo was next, Mesquite, Reminisce, Scent Of A Filly and Real Speed along the inside.  Another length to Unmistakable, still wide, another length to Textes From My Exes hugging the rail, Di Etti Just behind that one and Audrey Hepburn, still at the back under a snug hold.

Around the turn and down the backside, now three furlongs left to run, the half mile in legitimate :461 and Pirate Petranella still showing the way by two lengths.  Slipdamaloo wasn’t going to let her get away, giving chase, Then a foursome of Hollywood Do Over, Hollywood Greek from the rail, Noel Hickey between them and Jump from the outside.  Another length back to Reminisce, Scent Of A Filly to her outside, Unmistakable four wide, Real Speed skimming the rail.  Di Etti was just behind that group, Textes From My Exes to her inside, Mesquite still caught wide and Audrey Hepburn could still see them all.

Now inside the final furlong and down to the wire, Pirate Petranella still with a comfortable lead and the field was trying to close in, Reminisce and Scent Of A Filly coming on, Slipdamaloo being asked for more but just not responding, Di Etti with some late run as the others were done for the after noon… and as they hit the wire it was all Pirate Petranella, winning by a length.  Scent Of A Filly continued on well for the second spot, just in front of a very wide Reminisce.  Di Etta nabbed the fourth spot with Slipdamaloo in fifth.  Textes From My Exes was nexes… I mean next, then Noel Hickey, Unmistakable and Hollywood Greek in ninth.  Real Speed was tenth, Hollywood Do Over tiring to be eleventh, Audrey Hepburn, Mesquite was thirteenth and Jump tired from his early exploits to close this one out.

Pirate Petranella is a 2yo bay filly by Sneaky Little Pirate – In Z Balance, by Z Cars, and she was bred in Cal by her owner, Diablo Diablo.  This was her fourth win from seven starts and she now shows $793.890 in earnings.  Congratulations to the connections and to his wonderful filly.

Pirate Petranella broke alertly, took over soon after the break, continued to set the pace without much pressure, responded when asked, held off all foes late to win driving.  Scent Of A Filly rated back off of the pace while saving ground, four wide for the drive, full of run while no threat to the winner.  Reminisce four wide through the first turn and down the backside, swung five wide for room and continued on well to the finish.  Di Etti, lacked early speed, ground saving trip, closed late gap.  Slipdamaloo rated early, swept up to track the leader, flattened out late.  Textes From My Exes under a hold for the first half mile, passed tiring rivals late.  Noel Hickey, forwardly placed to the lane, did not respond from there. Unmistakable was void of speed, not a factor. Hollywood Geek tracked just behind the lead to the far turn, tired. Real Speed was outrun. Hollywood Do Over was forwardly placed for six furlong, tired. Audrey Hepburn trailed, outrun. Mesquite tired. Jump broke alertly, stopped.
