The size of the field for Saturday’s SUN Derby (GIII) may have been a surprise… the winner, not so much. Mb Stables’ Howl Of The Hound, sent of as the .50 favorite, took this big purse stakes by a length in a final time of 1:47.90 for the mile and an eighth and remains perfect in his six race career. Shalangar B B, second choice in the field of nine, took the second spot by a length over Tequila Rise in third. Greatest Game was fourth.
Howl Of The Hound is a 3yo black gelded son of Marry me Mandy – Stop Traffic, by Laffin Policeman, and he was bred by Jive Inc in NM. Acquired at the June 20 Auction for $27.060, and as mentioned, his is a perfect six-for-six in his career, now with $826.000 in earnings. Will he ever lose? This could get interesting.

Howl Of The Hound raced mid-pack early while in hand, steady press forward, engaged leader into the lane, went by, won driving. Shalangar B B off of the pace in the early stages, moved into contention on the far turn, game run while no challenge to the winner. Tequila Rise broke well, up to take the lead down the backside, lead to the top of the lane, headed, best of rest. Greatest Game rated back off of the pace, improved position through the turn, flattened out. Not Zalty pressed the pace for six furlongs, tired. Rotarian was never involved. Awesome Return some early speed, tired. Charley Buzz broke well, set early pace, stopped. Jinxed Authority was outrun.
