The Peter Pan (Grade 3)- $100.000 Purse
BEL- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Eighth on the Dirt
May 8, 2021
For some reason, the bettors were not high on Dutty John Crow, and made him a 39/1 longshot. We were higher on him, making him one of our picks after watching him finish second in the Coolmore Lexington, which was run in the mud. The Peter Pan was also run on an off track, as it was only listed as good. Dutty John Crow has been successful throughout his career up until he struggled in a couple of prep races. That was not enough to make us stop believing in him, and neither did Night Rider Stables, as the trainer wins the Peter Pan for the second time. He previously did this in 2013 with the late Tundra Storm. M Franco is the winning jockey, his first such win in the race. It would go in a time of 1:49.91. Let’s take a look!
(½ Mile- :47.93)- The early leader in the race is Test The Party Code, and the Mb Stables entry opens up an advantage of a length to a length and a half. Running in that second position would be our eventual winner, Dutty John Crow, for Night Rider Stables. He broke really well from the outside and was able to move over quickly. They are four wide behind him for second, and from inside to outside, this consists of Tormented (Mb Stables), Pier Pressure (Gdp Inc), Tequila Rise (Nakamura Stables), and Patriot (Mo Mentum). One more length back, in the middle of the field, we have Shelter At Home (D J C Racing Stables) and Cossack (Patterson Stables). There is then a gap of 2-3 lengths to Two Buck Chuck (Nakamura Stables). Trailing, are Community (Patterson Stables), Sublime Performance (Patterson Stables), and Booster (Nakamura Stables).
(¾ Mile- 1:11.78)- At the very front, there is not much chance as Test The Party Code holds the advantage over Dutty John Crow, but that one is starting to inch closer to the outside. Further back, Tequila Rose breaks away from the three horses that he had been running with previously, asserting himself with the third position with vision of his own push for the lead. Patriot tried to hang with him, and is fourth. Neither Tormented nor Pier Pressure were able to respond to this push. Cossack looks to make a move with an outside trip in the turn, and Shelter At Home starts to lose ground. Not much happening further back.
(Top Of Stretch, 2F To Go)- Dutty John Crow was good on exit of the turn, and takes over the top spot by the time they enter the stretch. Test The Party Code is still hanging in there running in second and we still have to watch Tequila Rose, who was moved to be within a length of the leader. Patriot remains in the fourth position but Cossack’s outside run is becoming a lot more interesting to watch. Tormented was still with this company, though Pier Pressure was backing out. Two Buck Chuck was becoming another to watch with a nice move from well off the pace, but there was a lot of ground that he still had to make up.
(Finish- 1:49.91)- Once Dutty John Crow took over the race lead, there would be no catching him. He would maintain his length advantage throughout the stretch, as Tequila Rose was never able to get any closer. That one gets second, however, narrowly over Test The Party Code, who’s rail trip gets him the third position. Cossack took it way outside to be fourth, fending off the late charge of Two Buck Chuck for the final piece of the purse. Tormented, Sublime Performance, Pier Pressure, Shelter At Home, Booster, and Community round it out.
About The Winner- Dutty John Crow, trained by Night Rider Stables and ridden to victory by M Franco, is a three year old gelding by Dial It In, and is out of Sweet Iron. He was bred by Night Rider Stables in California as a third quarter two year old, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in seven starts, his second stake win, and first graded win. His career earnings are now $182.000.
