Eight Cal-bred Sprinters in Sensational Star Stakes

4 SA     Sensational Star Stakes

$100.000    4yo&Up Foaled In CA       5 1/2f  Turf        123lbs

Cal bred sprinters will be headed to the gate on Sunday and we look at the field for the 2020 version of the Sensational Star Stakes going 5 1/2f on the turf course.  I’m going to the rail for my top choice and gave Cold Weather Rider the nod.  He only had a single in last year but his class gives me the ammo I need to see him as the favorite.  Right next door, Regret Nothing will be my second choice and again it’s his past races that put him up there for me.  The third spot is open in my eye, and I’d give 2-3 others a shot at that… it’s anyone’s race to win.

Here’s The Field –

1
Cold Weather Rider  Night Rider Stables  Fuentes Ru 123 3/1

A single win in ’19 taking down a stakes at GP late in the year, but this is one that stays busy and was a tiring 3rd last out in a quick sprint stakes.  This should be a bit softer than he’s been facing, so I look for a big run and a chance for a nice check.

2
Regret Nothing  Maxmillion Farm  Franco G 123 7/2

Was fourth in the Turf Dash at TAM last out and was closing quickly in that one after getting way off of the screen in the early going.  I’d love to see him stay a bit closer to the pace here and that could spell a big chance when they head down the lane.

3
Double Six  Mb Stables  Maldonado E 123 5/1

Six of eight last year, with five of those in a row… so he was sold for $100.000 and ran second for the new barn.  The big barn doesn’t mess around so it’s stakes time for this one and obviously he’s quick and has ability.  Give him a look and don’t leave him off of your tickets.

4
 Phar Lap  Threshold  Pereira T J 123 8/1

Nice win to kick-off the 2020 season, taking down OptAlw horses at FG on a soft turf course.  He was fifth v. graded stakes company three back and will needs his best to be in the thick of it here.  I’m sure the barn is doing the rain dance.

5
Lone Shadow  Maxmillion Farm  Gutierrez Mario 123 6/1

Max makes the hostile takeover move claiming this one for $20.000 last out when he won over this track down the hillside.  Went wire to wire that afternoon and certainly has the speed to be involved today.  He could come with some odds as well.

6
Exile And Return  South Beach Racing  Prat F 123 7/1

Consistent type that steps up from the claiming ranks to go after this bunch.  Only one start last year but he’s on the board in just about every race and could do the same with this group.  I’d at least use him on the trifecta tickets.

7
 Starling  John Henry  Rispoli U 123 9/1

Couple of struggling races after wining a stakes at BEL back in OCT.  Since then it was a tiring eleventh and did close a bit when fifth at FG on a damp turf course.  Has gaps between his starts and actually comes back quicker that unusual for this one.  He’s another that has a chance for a minor share.

8
Give Your All  Team 7 Illusions  Arroyo N Jr 123 9/1

Two wins last year but it’s been a while and it’s been a struggle of late.  He’s been more of a miler+ but shortens up as the barn tries to rattle him a bit and get him back into good form.  I think you have to watch him from afar, especially from this post.
