Eight to the Gate for Commonwealth Turf

 3  CD   Commonwealth Turf (GIII)

      $125.000    3yo      1 1/16m Turf        122lbs

3yo’s take to the CD turf as we look at the field for the 2019 Commonwealth Turf (GIII), to be run at a mile and a sixteenth on Saturday afternoon.  I’m sticking with the hot barn right now and have Oxford Manor in the top spot here today.  Smokey Stover has been smoooookin‘ of late, and this looks like another well placed entry that can get the job done.

I’ll put Hefner in the second spot and this one just seems to be sitting on a better effort after a few races where either the post, traffic or both could be used as excuses.  He should be placed a bit better by the rider and should make this interesting.

Here’s the Field –

Cartomancist    Maxmillion Farm    Saez G   122

5/2

Tired in the late stages of that graded race at SA last out, but this one is known to throw a bad race from time to time, and has shown the ability to bounce right back.  That was against older horses and he’s back with 3yo’s today.  I’d look for an improved effort today.

2
Oxford Manor    Smokey Stover    Gaffalione T   122

7/5

Got the job done last out over this trip taking the Jefferson Cup for his fourth win of the season.  This one loves the grass, loves the distance and looks ready to run his normal big race for the hottest stable going right now.  He should be a hand full here.

3
Hefner    Mb Stables    Beschizza A   122

4/1

His lone seasonal win came north of the border, winning against graded company back in June.  Was closing quickly last out when fourth against graded types, again, so you know he has some ability and some class.  You can never ignore the big stable’s entry, and I wouldn’t ignore this one.

4
Multiple Shadows    Our Athletes    Geroux F   122

 10/1

His three race win streak came to an end last out when beaten a mere length in the Hill Prince (GII) at BEL.  Nothing to be ashamed of coming out of that race and may be a horse with a lot to prove.  It looks like his best races are ahead of him and if he can stay clear of traffic, his closing ability could be lethal.

5
Man Childe    Our Athletes    Lanerie C J   122

12/1

The distance may have gotten to this one last out when seventh in the OK Derby (GIII) at RP.  Scales back a sixteenth for this one, and he was second in his only lawn start, so there could be room for improvement there, as well.  His works are showing a liking for the green stuff.

6
Crack Dab    Gdp Inc    Landeros C   122

15/1

His single seasonal victory came vs. state-bred Alw types at SAR over a strip labeled good, so the barn may be hoping for rain in Louisville this weekend.  He’s been on a steady diet of grass races so you know he likes the surface.

7
Sunday Phunnies    Nakamura Stables    Saez L   122

8/1

His graded races haven’t been anything to write home about, but he does make his money on the grass and has four wins on the lawn.  Back-to-back scores in early summer before an on-the-board effort in the Saranac (GIII), so maybe this is a spot for him to get back on track.

   Warino    D J C Racing Stables    Bridgmohan S X   122

Won at a distance on the GG grass last out to finally get something going in ’19, as his six previous seasonal outings were not much to get excited about.  He shows a couple of local starts, but again, they really don’t speak to anything promising.  Maybe his current form carries him to a small share.
