Eight to the Gate for ONT Colleen Stakes at WO

8/5/22

2   WO     ONT Colleen Stakes (GIII)

          $150.000    3yoF       1m  Turf          123lbs

We head up north of the border for a nice group of eight sophomore fillies going a mile on the WO turf course in the ONT Colleen Stakes (GIII).  It’s a wide open race, but I’ve landed on Mb Stable’s Love Of The People in this one.  She won two of three, with a near miss prior to that BEL Oaks (GI) fiasco… throw it out, draw a line thru it, what ever you want to call it… she can run and this is a good spot for her.  Let’s go right next door and put Sheena The Westie in it, if for no other reason than the Westie!  If it rains, all bets are off on this one, but a firm turf course should put her right in the middle of things.

Here’s The Field –

1
Time And Again    TwinTowersRacing    Ryan S   123   8/1

Has won her last two, both at the Alw level and both on the grass.  That mile win at CD was in very fast time, so the move up the ladder seems to be the right call.  If she can run back to that last out race, she could be a serious threat in this one.

2
   Zin    Rock Creek    Kimura K   123   7/2

Nice win in the Tepin at CD, over a soft turf course, to get back to the winning ways.  She’s been a bit iffy over her last five starts, but a second in the Memories of Silver and that last out win put her in the thick of things here.

3
Lotta Carnival    Oval Express Farms    Salles L   123   8/1

Only a maiden win to her credit but she was third in the Honeybee (GIII).  Sixth of nine over the soft Philly turf in her most recent, while facing Alw company, makes her a tough one to jump on here.  Her best would be competitive, but she needs to dig deep.

4
Tropical Mama    John Henry    Husbands P   123   6/1

Has changed hands a few time of late and this will be the second start for this barn.  She never lifted a leg in the Edgewood (GII) at CD last out, so if that is an indication, it could be another long day at the races.  She’s won a pair of stakes, so…

5
Mon Dieu    Mo Mentum Farm    Stein J   123   9/2

A first a second and a third from her last three starts, all over this turf course, so she loves the home cookin.  That last out win over ONT-bred Alw foes seems to say she’s running well right now, so give her a look… she could be tough.

6
Love Of The People    Mb Stables    Boulanger G   123   7/2

Stepped up to the big leagues in the BEL Oaks (GI) and beat one, but nothing to get too upset about in that one.  This is more to her liking, I think, and she shows two wins and a nose miss prior to that forgettable Big Apple race.  I think she will be in the middle of this one.

7
Sheena The Westie    Nakamura Stables    Flores Em   123   4/1

Purchased two back and it’s been a mixed bag… last of five in that Alw race at CD, but it was sprinting on wet grass, which I’m guessing is not to her liking, looking at her PP’s.  She came back to win the Cincinnati at BTP, going two turns on a firm lawn… I think you get the picture.

8
   Judicious State    Our Athletes    Husbands S P   123   9/2

Two wins from her last three starts as she broke maiden at TAM then won at CD last out over high-end Alw foes going a flat mile on the Louisville lawn.  She’s a well bred filly and with only five starts, she can improve… and may have some odds with her.
