Summertime Oaks (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
SA- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
June 16, 2018
Enoughs Enough had a great run during the winter time, winning three in a row, which included the Grade 2 Alexandra at FG. That was a win that would be good enough to get her into the KYO, but when the season changed to Spring, she was not as effective. Both the FG Oaks and the KYO saw her be nothing more then an also-ran. Spring might not be officially over yet, but the season changing again, moving to the summertime, could perhaps again signal a change in form. In the Summertime Oaks, Enoughs Enough was like the horse she was in the winter. Sure, this was not a field like the KYO given its small field size, but the talent was there in the opposition. The winning trainer is Mb Stables, and aboard the winner was V Espinoza. This is the second consecutive year that the trainer and the jockey have hooked up for the win in this race. Congratulations to them! Espinoza has four total wins in the stake, and Mb Stables now has three. The time of the victory was 1:42.13, which would have had her in a dead heat with last years winner. I guess, the more things change, the more they stay the same from 2017 in this case. Here’s a look at it.
(1/4 Mile- :24.36)- After a conservative start by everyone in the field, it will eventually be Fortune Tune, from Aml Racing, taking the lead, and doing so by a length as they made their way into the opening turn in a rather average opening quarter. Maxmillion Farm’s Night School ran second, staying on the rail, and she had a length on Enoughs Enough, our eventual race winner from Mb Stables. Trailing was Geek At Heart, but the Nakamura Stables entry was only three and a half lengths from the lead. At this point in the race, it didn’t look like anyone was looking to take command, so there was not much excitement to write about. Everyone was running rather conservatively into the first turn.
(½ Mile- :48.36)- The methodical opening pace picked up a bit in the second quarter, and we began to see more separation within the field. In the turn both Fortune Tune and Night School began to turn up, and opened up in the backstretch. Fortune Tune led by about a quarter length on Night School, but the gap to third had now widened to be 4 ½ lengths, more then doubling what it was when they reached a quarter mile. In the third position, Enoughs Enough dropped off, and led Geek At Heart by half a length.
(Top Of Stretch- 1.7F To Go)- As they made their way around the turn, Fortune Tune looked to be in great form, keeping a steady stride, and for the moment, looked like he was putting away Night School. That one was now about a length back, but did still have a good lane on the rail if he found more stretch speed. Creeping closer to the front now would be Enoughs Enough. Her run began about midway through the turn, and as they entered the stretch, she had a reasonable two and a half lengths to make up if she could show us that wintertime form from earlier in the year. Geek At Heart was coming up empty.
(Finish- 1:42.13)- With a furlong to go, Fortune Tune still seemed to look good on the front end, and Enoughs Enough had only gained half a length, at best, to this point. Surely, this race was going to be hers, right? At this point, two things happened, the main thing being the additional push put forth by Enoughs Enough, to power on through between her and Night School and get up for the win. Also, Fortune Tune simply ran out of gas and struggled to get to the wire, as evidenced by the fact that she was also passed by Night School for second, a horse that it seemed as though she had put away. Geek At Heart opted to watch the excitement in front of her rather then participate in it.
About The Winner: Enoughs Enough, trained by Mb Stables, and ridden to victory by V Espinoza, is a three year old filly by Grandeur, and it out of Panoramique (by Copper Bottom). She was bred in Florida by Mb Stables as a second quarter two year old, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fourth in seven starts, her third stake win, and second graded win. Her career earnings are now $356.400.
