Evening Jewel Offers Disappointing Field

Evening Jewel Stakes ($200.000 Purse)

If there was ever an endorsement to breed in California, here it is. One of these horses is going to take home 60% of this $200.000 purse. Certainly, that is exciting, but I have to be honest with you, this field is disappointing. I’ve seen better fields in mid-level allowances and $30.000 ungraded stakes. The race, for the longest time, had just two entries and as I look, I am pretty sure that I figure out which ones those two were. Two others were entered last minute, and it shows. I apologize to those who want a better quality article out of me, but the combined earnings of the four horses here is a little over $158.000. The moral of the story: breed in California or look at these state bred stakes, because they are a great opportunity to get good purses. Here’s a quick look at the field.

#1- Golden Niagra (Maxmillion Farm, ridden by A Cedillo)- The trainer thinks highly of this filly that he purchased in private sales for $50.000, that he paid twice the entry fee in order to get her to run. She’s won two of ten, but perhaps was over her head going long in graded stakes, going back and forth between the main track and the grass. It’s been two months since the sale, so Maxmillion has taken the time to get her right. There is also notable add changes on her, so look for her to run well.

#2- Pink Attack (Maxmillion Farm, ridden by J Valdivia Jr)- One race, eighth place, ten lengths out. Well, horses can get a post race bounce, and I imagine that has happened with Pink Attack. She actually worked extremely well here a couple days ago, but as this is not over a mile, Pink Attack looks like field filler here, but could take third.

#3- Rename (Team 7 Illusions, ridden by D Van Dyke)- The trainer thinks so highly of this horse that he has not renamed her from whatever it might have been before. (Though perhaps there is a reason why he has not done so). Good works, and has potential. But needs a name to get respect from me.

#4- Cherokee Duchess (Allinthegate, ridden by R Bejarano)- This filly has done everything right, and was likely the other horse that had been entered here for a while. Now with the race filling, Cherokee Duchess has a chance to extend her streak to a perfect 4-for-4. While I believe that Golden Niagra is going to run much better with Maxmillion, Cherokee Duchess has done everything right in her career this far and makes the jump into graded company. She is the one to beat.

Prediction: 4-1-2-3
