Everyone Has a Shot in The TAM Derby

16   TAM     The TAM Derby (GIII) [KYD]

       $400.000             3YO              1 1/16m  Dirt             120lbs

Seems like we were just here in TAM, but any chance to visit Ybor Brewing is a good weekend… the gate should be full for The TAM Derby (GIII) as the sophomores continue to move down the TC Trail.  Let’s give the nod to the big barn and their lightly raced Prevent… he sure did look good closing down late to be third in the Lewis Stakes (GIII) at SA, and that was only his third start, so the sky is the limit for this one.  South Point is another that deserves a big look… he was running well before the vet stopped by, but since the snip, he’s been a rock star.  Broke maiden at SA then just missed here in the Davis (GIII) so you have to like his chances.  Bold Ruler is another lightly raced colt, and he sure did look unstoppable when closing for the win in the Lewis Stakes (GIII) at SA, last out.  He should be right there again today.  As for the 6000-pound elephant in the room, keep walking and don’t say a word!

It’s a loaded group and should be a good one!

Here’s The Field –

1
   Drenched    Allinthegate    Davis D   120   10/1

It’s been a mixed bag for this one, breaking maiden at SAR, then taking a nice Alw group at AQU only to close well to be fourth in the Gun Runner.  His ’23 debut was a tiring tenth of twelve in the Lewis (GIII) at SA, so it will be interesting to see which horse shows up today.

2
   Timeless    D J C Racing Stables    Lopez P   120   8/1

Won three in a row, all vs. NY-bred types and two of those were stakes races.  He closed well to be third in the Lecomte (GIII) then gave an uninspired mid-pack race int the Risen Star (GII) when sixth in that race.  Can he flash that NY form in open company?

3
World Of Outlaws    Mb Stables    Silvera Ru   120   7/1

He’s been a new horse since the vet stopped by the barn… opened his career with a pair of fifths, but broke maiden right after the unkindest of cuts, only to run second in the Winkfield at AQU last out.  It’s time to extend the distance and go after graded horses, and you never count the big barn out.

4
   Calling All Angels    D J C Racing Stables    Gaffalione T   120   8/1

Solid type that has two wins from four starts, add in that third and he really only has the one bad race that looks like the “gate got him”.  Steps up in class, but he’s been tough so it certainly looks like a spot where he could make some noise and bring some odds with him.

5
   Bold Ruler    Fractious    Velazquez J R   120   3/1

Kicked off his 3yo season with a big win in the Lewis (GIII) at SA.  He broke maiden at AQU in his first start and was a fast closing fourth in the KY Jock Club (GII), he’s bred well, looks great and seems to be the one to get past today.

6
Nevada Lee    Nakamura Stables    Morales P   120   7/1

He was sixth over this track last out, in the Davis (GIII) but had two wins prior, both on the weeds, breaking maiden at CD on a soggy course, then won the Logan at SA on firm going.  Is he a turf specialist or can he translate that form to the main track today?

7
   South Point    Alydar Stables    Alvarado F T   120   7/2

Had a couple of thirds to close out his freshman season, but the vet stopped by to tell him that racehorse is his job and he’s responded, breaking maiden at SA then running a big race to be second in the Davis (GIII) over this surface.  He’s getting better with every start and should be in the middle of this one.

8
Hamilton Library   First Flight Stable   Jaramillo E   120 3/1

Blind squirrel finds nut…  horrible 7% (or less) trainer happens upon a horse that wins a big race… can lightning strike twice?  He’s really never run a bad race, won the Davis (GIII) over this surface last out, and is living proof that bad trainers can get lucky.  Can he close from outer space yet again?

9
   Range Rover    Arindel    Ferrer J C   120   9/2

Three wins in six lifetime starts, so there is no doubt that this one knows how.  Looked good winning the Sugar Bowl at FG… if there is any knock on him, his only bad race was at a mile and a sixteenth, where his big races have been sprinting.

10
   Prevent    Mb Stables    Dettori L   120   7/2

Another from the Mb outfit and he’s only been to the gate three times, breaking maiden at second asking, then closing fast to be third a length back i the Lewis (GIII), both of those at SA.  You know the big barn comes for the cash, so expect this one to be in the middle of the festivities.

11
   Pink Shark    Arindel           SCR

 Scratch

12
   Ben Nevis    Hippyheart           SCR

Early Scratch

13
   Joachim    Asgar    Castanon J L   120   9/2

Draws in off of the AE and his west coast form has been very nice, indeed.  Broke maiden at DMR, just missed in the CAC Derby at SA, then was third in the El Camino at GG.  The barn has to be happy he got into this one, and that second at SA was from the eleven post, so… he should be a factor.

14
Sinning Black    Night Mare Racing   No Rider   120   8/1

Lightly raced gelding broke maiden at AQU, closed to be fifth in the Jerome and again to be fourth in the Davis (GIII) over this surface, last out.  Now drawing into the outside 12 post.  He’s running well and I think you have to worry about him.
