GIII – Jones Stakes
$300.000 Graded Stake 1 1/16 Miles on Dirt for Three Year Olds
The feature race on Labour Day Monday at PRX was the $300.000 GIII Jones Stake which featured a good group of nine three year olds. Coming off a second place finish in the LA Derby and solid runs in a few of the TC races Withdrawn went off at nearly 4/1 as the post time favorite.
Flying out the gate quickest of all was Wintergreen Mint from the seven post. He was quickly followed by Sir Plunky Monkey. They ran four and five wide all the way around the first turn at a lightening fast pace setting extremely fast first quarter and half mile fractions before hitting the far turn. As expected with the quick early pace the leaders began to give way and the backfield started making their move.
Around the far turn a wall of horses swung wide and started to make their move lead by Special Guy, Farley On Wheels and Coin Flip. Workingmanshero and Grayteful Jack were also close behind and Withdrawn trailed the field.
When they hit the stretch Farley On Wheels made the quickest move pushing himself to the lead with Special Guy to his outside who couldn’t hold on to second as fast closing Grayteful Jack was able to sneak ahead in the last strides to steal second. Special Guy finished third and one of the early pace setters Wintergreen Mint took home fourth place money.
Congratulations to the connections of Farley On Wheels who stopped the clock in 1:41.39 for the mile and sixteenth race.
