New Mexico Breeders Derby
Purse $130.000 – For Three Year Olds Foaled In NM
1 1/16 Miles – Dirt
Sunland Park – March 29, 2026
The 13th running of the New Mexico Breeders Derby brings together a small group of five state-bred three-year-olds, many of whom have already faced each other throughout the past two years. This spot typically serves as a steppingstone for the division, with a mix of proven stakes form and lightly raced runners still on the rise. T Boy Racing has won this race in back-to-back years, tying with Drabfantasy to have three wins in the New Mexico Breeders Derby. With familiarity across the field and a route distance that can expose weaknesses, this year’s edition should come down to who gets the best trip. Let’s take a closer look at the field to see who can emerge as one of the top upcoming New Mexico-bred.
- Rust In Peace – (Xcel Racing, E. Medellin) Claimed for $12.500 last October, this gelding didn’t fire in his first start for new connections when trying the turf for the first time. He rebounded at Parx in a claiming event, drawing clear in the stretch to win by a length. Now in 2026, Rust In Peace has made two starts in New Mexico-restricted stakes company, finishing second and third. His most notable effort came last out in the Hedeman Mile, where he sat off the pace and closed strongly, falling just a half-length short at the wire. With steadily improving speed figures and proven route experience, he shapes up as a legitimate contender.
- Main Man – (Bears Stable, A J. Juarez Jr.) This son of Remainder comes into this race in sharp form, fresh off a win in the Hedeman Mile. He enjoyed a perfect stalking trip just off the pace before taking over at the quarter pole and drawing away impressively. Prior to that, Main Man did most of his racing around one turn against allowance company. His best effort came last November, when he trailed the field into the far turn before unleashing a powerful stretch run to mow down the entire field. Having won the key prep for this race and finishing off the board just once in eight starts, he will be my top pick in here.
- Hydrostatic – (Mb Stables, L. Contreras) After breaking his maiden by three lengths and winning a $25.000 claiming race, Hydrostatic was claimed, then bought at auction before ending up in the hands of Mb Stables. He was immediately put back in allowance company at Fair Grounds, finishing third in a field of six. He makes his second start off the layoff and draws a comfortable middle post, which should allow him to be on or near the lead in this compact field. This will also be his first attempt around two turns, but based on a series of sharp morning workouts, Hydrostatic appears primed for a strong effort.
- El Jefe – (Night Rider Stables, F S. Valdez) He brings plenty of stakes experience into this race, with his last three starts coming in graded company. Connections took a shot to try and get on the Derby trail with El Jefe, but he was unable to make an impact, finishing off the board in the Rebel, the Robert B. Lewis, and the San Vicente. That said, he has shown success against state-bred company, highlighted by a win in the New Mexico Classic Juvenile. This is a good entry to help him get back on track with another stakes win. If there is a pace duel up front, you are going to hear from El Jefe late.
- Wonderfully Distant – (Threshold, M T. Fuentes Jr.) A filly taking on the boys! Wonderfully Distant is clearly taking a shot here, trying dirt for the first time while also stretching out to two turns. She broke her maiden on debut over the turf at Belterra Park before stepping up into allowance company. The daughter of Wonderful War already owns an allowance win, capturing a one-other-than in comfortable fashion. The big question is how she’ll handle the dirt, but if she takes to it, she could make things very interesting—and it would be quite a story if she can turn the tables on the boys!
