Fourth Straight Win For Mb Stables In PID Masters Stakes

The PID Masters Stakes (Grade 2)- $400.000 Purse
PID- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
Six and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt
September 17, 2018

The rains came, as anticipated, on Monday, and perhaps this was the reason for the scratch of Dashboard Rahy, though there may have been other reasons there. The track would be listed as muddy, but that would not stop the trainer who has truly been a master of this race. Mb Stables has won a lot of stakes in his career, but for this Grade 2, he has now won four straight. This time it was Are We Dreamin, a fine Commanding filly, prevailing over a whole cluster of rivals to get the victory. Aboard the winner was R Bejarano, earning his first win in the stake. Congratulations to them! The time of the win in the mud was 1:17.89. As this was the first time the race ran with the muddy designation, there is nothing we can compare that time too. Let’s look at the race!

(1/4 Mile- :23.07)- Temple Of The Brave, the post time favorite from Crocker Ggs, bursts out of the starting gate, not caring about the mud beneath her and sets a pretty quick opening quarter given the track condition. She leads by a length and a half over the second place Baby Goes To Rio from Aml Racing, and Capella Rising, out of Stone Creek Farm as each of them also began well from the gate. Symphonic is a length behind them in fourth. In the center of the pack as the three horses that started on the inside, and they are all out of Mb Stables. The eventual winner, Are We Dreamin was between her stablemates, Oyster Puff and Forgetful, and trailed by about three and a half. Trailing the field early on would be Theatre Music, our pick to win from Smokey Stover, and La Havana Vieja, for D J C Racing Stables.

(½ Mile- :46.60)- The second quarter mile does not see a whole lot of change in pecking order of the field, and that is not terribly surprising. Temple Of The Brave slows it down just a little bit over this stretch, but still leads by nearly two over Baby Goes To Rio and Capella Rising, and Symphonic was preparing to make it three wide. Behind her, not much movement quite yet.

(Top Of Stretch- 1.5F To Go)- It’s still Temple Of The Brave in the lead, but her lead has nearly evaporated. Capella Rising and Baby Goes To Rio have pulled to within a length, but the horses to watch were two of the Mb horses, as both Oyster Puff and Are We Dreamin set their sights on the opening between those two. Oyster Puff had the better lane, but Are We Dreamin had more strength in her stride. Symphonic remains in the fourth lane, and is still two lengths out as she runs steady but has not pushed forward quite yet. Forgetful and Theatre Music looked to be considering wide trips in the stretch while La Havana Vieja uneventfully trailed the field.

(Finish- 1:17.89)- Things were pretty tight as the field approached the wire, and it was beginning to look pretty good for Capella Rising, but in the final half furlong or so, she drifted to the outside, causing herself to finish in a dead heat for third. This opened up a lane for Are We Dreamin to come on though to the outside of Temple Of The Brave, and inside Capella Rising. Once she had this lane, Bejarano gave her some urging, and it was lights out for the rest of the field as she had a gear that no one else in the field would have. She wins by a length and a half over a six-way photo for second between a cluster of horses. These six could have finished in any order between second and seventh, so its surely frustrating for those who missed a check in this photo. The order amongst them is Symphonic second, over the dead-heat for third between Capella Rising and Oyster Puff. Then its Baby Goes To Rio, Temple Of The Brave, and Theatre Music. Forgetful and La Havana Vieja take the final spots.

About The Winner– Are We Dreamin, trained by Mb Stables, and ridden to victory by R Bejarano is a three year old filly by Commanding, and is out of the BC-winning dam, Hawaiian Pirate. She was bred in California as a third quarter two year old by Mb Stables, the only trainer she has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fifth in ten starts, and is her second stake win, each are graded. Her career earnings are now $476.970.
