NY Stallion Series- Times Square ($200.000 Purse)
AQU- For Three Year Olds Foaled In NY
Six and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt
April 22, 2023
The NY Stallion Series- Times Square consisted of a group of seven horses looking to make a name for themselves. Only two of them have earned at least $100.000 for their career, and the highest amount of earnings coming into the race was $163.400. That would make this race about opportunity, a chance to get a big win and potentially set themselves up for bigger and better in their still young careers. This was especially appealing to Smokey Stover and Arindel, as the two of them combined for five of the seven runners in the field. However, neither of them would end up with the winner. That distinction would go to La Canada Racehorses, who brought Freed Up here for his stake debut and hoping it would be his fourth straight victory. It would turn out to be exactly that as he was content to let the pacesetters do their thing before making a late run. It is the first win in the race for La Canada Racehorses, and the jockey Os Gomez. Congratulations to them! The winning race time was 1:15.28, which is among the better winning times for the race. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :22.41)- The first five positions early in the race all belong to Smokey Stover and Arindel. First up, we got a couple of Smokey Stover horses on the front end as Million Dollar Baby is the quickest out of the gate and holds a length lead over his stablemate, American Star. As we hit the quarter mile, the two Arindel horses, Bora Sin and Hot Shark are beginning to pull up alongside American Star, making it a three wide battle for second. Starry Wonder, Smokey’s third horse, is behind himself just a length behind them. Trailing are the horses owned by other trainers, with the eventual winner out of La Canada Racehorses, Freed Up, running sixth and giving up five lengths to the leaders. To his inside, Enjolras is within a half length of him for D J C Racing Stables.
(1/2 Mile- :45.76, Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- As the field enters the turn, Million Dollar Baby is still out in front, but he begins to get a little leg weary midway through and has no answer for the three that had been running right behind him when they made their move. None of them were showing more ambition than the other at this time, so this was more a product of Million Dollar Baby tiring. American Star now inherits the lead for the stretch, and he brings Bora Sin and Hot Shark with him. Starry Wonder was still behind them, but not making a move. However, there was certainly an exciting move to watch and that was from Freed Up as he broke free from the back midway through the turn and would close quickly on the frontrunners prior to entering the stretch. Now, he was only two lengths from the front, and it really didn’t seem like any of the front five could have an answer for him. Enjolras was not able to duplicate that and remained at the back.
(Finish- 1:15.28)- The hardest thing for Freed Up to deal with in the stretch was to find a lane to work to run through. There was enough of a gap between Bora Sin and American Star, and Os Gomez set his sights on that. Freed Up was clearly the best in the stretch, and it was just a matter of time before he took the lead, and the only question would be by how many lengths would it be, and who would complete the exacta. He did not let up to the wire and goes on to win by two and a half, with Bora Sin and Hot Shark taking the second and third spots. Smokey Stover gets only a fourth-place check from his three entries, courtesy of American Star. Enjolras, Starry Wonder, and Million Dollar Baby round it out.
About The Winner- Freed Up, trained by La Canada Racehorses and ridden to victory by Os Gomez, is a three-year-old gelding by Cp Free Sunset, and it out of Return Bay. He was bred in New York by La Canada Racehorses as a first quarter two-year-old and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his fifth in eleven starts, his fourth consecutive, and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $241.710.
