The normal big day of racing on the First Friday before the First Saturday in May, and that means the ladies are the headliner, and we look at the field for the 2024 KY Oaks (GI), a mile and an eighth test for the 3yo fillies, and what a nice group we have for this rendition!
So, what’s the storyline here today? Great breeding job, great purchase… or dund…dund…dundddd… the weather. The forecast certainly says rain, and we know how that can change a race. I’m going to use The Green Card for the pre-race commentary, since weather is factored into those selections.
Willie says Purple Charger is the way to go, and you can see the wet track influence, right off the bat. She won the Ashland (GI) at KEE on a wet track and shows two wins and a second on such. Now don’t be confused, she runs big on dry tracks, as well, so she’s not a one-trick pony… oh no, she can run.
He stays with the same philosophy and takes Wasted Away in the second spot, as she was the runner-up in the Ashland (GI). She also broke maiden on a wet track, so I see the point. She’s lightly raced with only five starts, but has been close in all, while showing both speed and a closing kick.
Matching numbers for the third spot gives you four for the price of three, and goodness knows, we love a DH in these parts. Nazca Lines has a four-race win-streak going and has looked invincible in some of those efforts. Of course I’ll be bad-mouthed by the peanut gallery, despite the monster declaration for this filly. Also, Beach Towel lands third place numbers, and she’s a horse that really gets me going. Just a hard knocking type that seems to know when to turn it on.
Best of Luck to Everyone!! Here’s The Field –
