General Tsao rallied his way into the MNR winner’s circle with a half-length score in the G3 WV Derby. The Saturday rain had the MNR track looking like a bog, but, like all good soldiers, General Tsao didn’t complain and just got the job done. The Mojica Racing-trainee has now reeled off five consecutive wins since bringing a winning bid of $2.000 in the March Auction. The $300.000 winner’s share of the G3 WV Derby purse brings his bankroll to $345.920 for his career.
General Tsao broke in the last group, but found himself on the rail and well off of the pace set by Everymanforhimself early on. Racing in tandem with Schmidt, he was five lengths back from the :48.73 half-mile posted by Everymanforhimself as well as the 1:13.78 three-quarter split posted by Ideal Info.
General Tsao commenced his rally from the two-path before tipping-out to the three-path coming down the lane. He finally reeled-in Ideal Info just inside the sixteenth pole and was inching away when he hit the wire in 1:53.61 for the 9-furlongs. Ideal Info held off America First to complete the exacta while Magz, Schmidt, Everymanforhimself, and Anna Da Artist completed the order of finish.
